Billy 0 #1 September 25, 2001 Hay,,Had an interesting thing happen this weekend,, we were doin a hopnpop from 10.5 after sunset,, I thought I was stable, and threw out my pilot chute,, which immediately wrapped around my right arm,, on seeing the video I was still on a slight left turn and feet just a tad low,, which put my right hand up in the burble,, I freaked for a sec but was able to get my arm free and had a stable opening,, guess I just want ya ta take that xtra sec on a hop n pop,, and throw out that PC hard for clean air...B
3fLiEr 0 #2 September 26, 2001 I know someone with a similar experience doing a jump and dump from 1,200 ft - due to the panic of getting the PC out coz of low altitude the PC wrapped around his neck - he initiated reserve drills and all was cool. The air near the aircraft is not clean so gnarly winds can have wierd effects on your PC - which is why when i did a hop and pop from 1,100ft I did the sensible thing and took a small delay...... ;opBSBD
skymedic 0 #3 September 26, 2001 a hop and pop from 1100 feet? are you nuts...and you went for your main too? yikes...MarcBecause I fly, I envy no man on earth
lazerq3 0 #4 September 27, 2001 I second that "are you nuts?". I have a bungy kill set up for my pc so at 1100ft I 'm going for the reserve!!! But hey you walked away so who am I to say. ( man that ryhmed)jason
weid14 0 #5 September 27, 2001 See, thats a benefit of learning at a C-182 DZ, you're never really weathered out until the ceiling gets below 1800 feet. of course with today's slower opening canopies you may want a little more elevation, we used to go up and stick the tail of the plane at the ceiling base and have accuracy competitions. 3fLiEr 0 #6 September 27, 2001 Yeah my mate had a bungy PC - he was a bit concerned but hey he lobbed out anyways................ Nice work soldier.............. he soon changed his PC though ....... I think it scared him abit...............BSBD
SkymonkeyONE 4 #7 September 27, 2001 I don't have any problem jumping out on my main at 1000 feet, so long as it isn't my very-snivelly 75. I have cut away from a crew wrap at 900 feet before, but it was either that or frap in. I have made "several" jumps from 500 feet too.Chuck
3fLiEr 0 #8 September 27, 2001 Im with ya man ...... I would have no problems getting out at 1,000ft on my main - as long as I had packed it and my Cypres was turned off - just incase it snivelled!! - to be honest as long as I had packed for it I would not have a problem going sub 1000...... People who would not get out at sub 2,000 whatcha goin' to do if you have an aircraft emergency at 1000ft an you need to get out - are you goin' to be so nervous you go unstable and get caught in your lines or are you just goin' to get outta the door and flick the PC knowing you have done it before........ I know what side I would rather be on!FreeFall Chimp guy ...Your "several" jumps from 500ft would that be something like a jump with a fox bar chance???......... ;opBSBD
freeflir29 0 #9 September 27, 2001 Just me....but I don't see getting out below 2,000 without a reason. Whatever it may be but I'm not gonna do it for S&G's. I like altitude. Altitude is my friend!"This conversation ends right here Captain! You can talk to the ALO when he gets back."-MeClay

But for me with how my chute opens and my bungee set up I would most likely go for the reserve! Especailly with only 46 jumps and lowest opening being 2700ft, 1000-2000ft would probably scare the shit outa me alone with out having to worry about if my main was going to inflate on time!jason
RemiAndKaren 0 #11 September 28, 2001 Agreed Lazer... sub 2K: its the reserve3f: I would think about your position on this if I were you... If in you mind 1000 feet is good enough for your main AS LONG as your AAD is off, if you come to an emergency situation and you need to get out at 1000 or 1500: what are you going to do? maybe you;ll have a clear mind on what the process you'll apply and your decission making will be quick, but at low altitude, you should have a "1 plan" plan.... maybe you have already...RemiMuff
3fLiEr 0 #12 September 28, 2001 Everyone should know what they would do at a 1000ft emergency exit - if you aint - it aint going to be easy when you have to lob out NOW! - I have a plan - dont you worry about that!BSBD

I don't understand your comment. If he needs to get out at 1000 feet, he will do exactly what he describes doing, which is get out at 1000 feet with his main. He will be better prepared for that than someone who has never gotten out below 12,000 (which, nowadays, describes a lot of new grads.)And you are aware that your cypres will not work if you bail out at 1000 feet, aren't you?-bill von
Aviatrr 0 #14 September 30, 2001 Quote And you are aware that your cypres will not work if you bail out at 1000 feet, aren't you? That's assuming that you never got to 1500ft.. If I'm at the back of the airplane, it's coming down fast, we're told to get out at 1300, and since there are 18-20 people ahead of me I don't get out until 1000-1100....I'm not going to trust that the CYPRES has not armed.. Technically, it shouldn't arm until you reach 1500 - but it may not work exactly as advertised..MikeOh, and regarding the comment about many grads never getting out below 12k....unfortunately, that's too true.. Today there was a load that wasn't able to get full altitude due to weather, and they couldn't find a hole over the DZ.. They came back down to 3500 to let anybody out that wanted to get out.. Out of 10 fun jumpers, 4 got out.. Many said it was too low..

A hop and pop, even at 1000 feet with an armed cypres, is generally not going to cause a cypres fire. You'd need a 5-6 second delay to even reach firing speed, and one could argue that if you _do_ take a 6 second delay from 1000 feet, a cypres firing is not a bad thing. (Of course, you still have the usual worry about a 3 second delay and a 3 second high speed snivel.)I worry more about people who trust their cypres to save them in the above situation. There is one situation in which a cypres is designed to save you, and that's a no-pull from freefall speeds. I know of at least one person who died when his cypres, which he admitted to friends he relied upon, did not fire after a bailout at 1000 feet.-bill von
