Pre AFF Tunnel time?

Recommended Posts

Ok so i did AFF level 1 to raise some money for charity in January, unfortunately due to financial constraints I am having to wait till November till my next jump :(

Booked to do all of AFF in Zhills B|

However in the UK we have two VWTs set to open at the end of summer.

Would it be worth getting some tunnel time before I fly out to the USA? How much tunnel time? Any idea of cost (or do I have to wait till bodyflight/skyventure announce?).

Thanks in advance ;)

I did 1.5 hours in the SVT @ Orlando prior to AFF.

Finished AFF in 3 jumps as a result - I can't recommend tunnel time prior to AFF enough.

You'll love it and it will really help you get your head in the right place because you have more body confidence.

Just be prepared for an utter lack of canopy control skills though - thats the only thing I regret about finishing AFF so quickly. I'm just now getting to the point where I feel comfortable under canopy and am getting pretty good at standing up my landings.

Best of luck,

Side note: I'll be out at both tunnels later this year, maybe we can meet up and fly! :)
Tunnel time will improve your flying sooooooo much. I think a good way to describe the tunnel is like a driving range. It's not the golf course (skydive) but it prepares you well for it with out all the hazards of water, sand (risks/worries of jumping), etc. It's a skydivers training tool, all of the top teams in the world spend time in the tunnel.

Well you could fly, I could flop about like a fool :P

Suppose it depends on the cost, we have two tunnels being built and no clear indication of pricing yet.

You'll do more than flop around silly ;):D:)
Both tunnels will have reasonable pricing I'm sure, it will still more than likely be cheaper per min. than a lift ticket :)
Everyone has the pricing from 2 other SV locations so how we have no clue on price is a little odd since the franchise is the same. To me (and I'm f'n crazy:D so what do I know?!?!:D) the 2 SVO tunnels would give you at least a good number to guess from and convert to Euros. They take care of skydivers don't worry. If $$$ price is your concern, they have to price it so people will fly it remember ;) They want them to operate :)

Well spoke to the people at bodyflight which is due to open soon and got a very informative leaflet with prices. (thanks beverly)

£84 (approx 140$) for 3 hours of training and 7.5 minutes tunnel time.

You think this would be enough to give significant help during AFF? (obviously it will vary person to person)

Hi Daniel,

Don't forget that we're still running the introductory offer for skydivers; 5 minutes for £30. You can buy a maximum of two vouchers per person and there is no use-by date. However the offer runs out on 1st August 05.

This offer is a great way for skydivers to check us out. Keep in mind that bulk time with coaching is available too.

Significantly is a tricky word because everyone's perception of 'significant' differs.

As you said, progressions are very much a case by case basis. With the right coach/instructor, tunnel time will definately help you out in freefall. I'm sure your AFF instructors would be happy to hear that you have flown before skydiving.

Talk instructors and coaches at the dz you plan to jump at. They can get you familar with the manauvers you will need to be proficient at in the sky in order to pass levels. Work on those in the tunnel and it will help, just being in the air stream will also get you comfortable in a different environment.

Spend what you can afford to on tunnel time, I'd say give it a whirl you don't have much to loose. If you like it and want to fly more, you can go from there.

Talk with coaches, tunnel instructors, then go fly!!!!:)

Could I tack 10 minutes using this offer onto the back of a triple (7.5 minute) session?

Booked 17.5 minutes, hopefully will help me a little with AFF.

Relax, have fun, be ready to learn new things, and it will only help. Have a very open mind and go in with the attitude that if you have fun it was a successful trip, anything past that is icing on the cake :)
Please let us know how it goes. I'd love to fly Bedford sooner than later, I'm green over here.

Bev sounds great, glad you got hooked up with someone friendly and who could take care of you!

Just got back, oh my god it was sooo fun.

Got in tunnel at 2pm for 6 session (1min 15sec each), obviously after 1 AFF jump I flopped around like an idiot, just couldn't stop turning was bouncing off the net, really no control at all, guy holding me all the time.

At 4pm had 4 sessions (2min 30sec each), first 5 minutes I was staying pretty stable and being released by instructors, by the last 5 minutes I was able to stay on heading, could turn with a reasonable amount of precision, could control fall rate, at one stage had instructor flying with me shaking his hand and laughing.

Bodyflight in bedford kicks ass by the way, really helpful instructors, really nice building, great vibe etc etc.

Damn it I can see how it can get addictive :)

I wasnt sure until I was through AFF and passing the other students up.

Got back from the US of A yesterday, did AFF in 3 days, would have been 2 if it hadn't been so damn windy the second day (only got one jump in).

Didn't have to repeat any levels and it was clear that the tunnel time help immensely.

Managed 17 jumps in total and had a crazy amount of fun out in Z-Hills the people there were really great to be around.

Hopefully get back out there soon. B|
