You're only two clicks away from that function now. If you click on the name of the person, then you see his profile. And at the bottom-right of that profile page is the "send private message" button. So what you're proposing would only eliminate one click. I don't consider the current method to be a hindrance, IMO. I use Netscape, and I can right-click on the user name, which brings up a selection window, and then I select "open link in new tab", which creates an additional window for the user profile.
