eml 0 #1 December 3, 2001 ok, looking for input. I know its all personal preference, but let say I don't particularly need to swoop and surf landings. which is a better zero p canopy a 7 cell or a 9 cell. I weigh 210 without gear. pros and cons etc. blue ones everyone!
Jabeln79 0 #2 December 3, 2001 I have a 7 cell triathalon 190, i love it so for although only 10 jumps on it so far. very responsive, and really cuts into the wind well..So on windy days it really has good forward movement... Although i didnt mind the 9 cell i used while renting aside from the fact that it was a skymaster
PhreeZone 20 #3 December 3, 2001 What you need to look at is what are you going to be doing with the canopy? Casual CRW, occ demo jump, just using the canopy as a device to land after skydiving? A seven cell will do all of these just fine.Even if you say now that you are not interesed in swooping or surfing, is the thought in the back of your mind? If so get a nine cell. Learn how to flare and surf the right way. My old Spectre 170 could surf 10-15 feet with a litle effort. Bridgett Leiss (sp?) is using a 7 cell Spectre on the pro swoop turny right now with good results. Nine cells will get you back from a long spot while a 7 will just put you short. If your coming from F111 to ZP, get a JM or some one you know that flys a ZP GOOD show you the differences in the flare between a zp and a F111 canopy.Generaly, any ZP canopy can swoop, I've seen Tris, Spectres, Safires and many other non-traditional swoop canopys get a good surf going.I'm not sure what to put here right now..... SkymonkeyONE 4 #5 December 3, 2001 QuoteBridgett Leiss (sp? It's "Liss", but no matter) is using a 7 cell Spectre on the pro swoop turny right now with good resultsActually, Bridgette used to jump a Spectre 97, but then jumped a too-big Cobalt for a bit, then was last seen jumping a Xaos at Perris in November. Still, a Spectre isn't a bad "new-age" 7-cell. Sort of like a Diablo or an Atair Indigo.ChuckMy webpage HERE
riggerrob 643 #6 December 3, 2001 7-cells, hmm. Most reserves have 7 cells. Most CReW canopies have 7 cells. Most accuracy canopies have 7 cells. Most BASE canopies have 7 cells. There is entire class of Z-P 7-cell canopies designed for casual weekend jumpers. It all started with the Triathlon. The Triathlon is an early 1980s CReW canopy with updated materials and consistently soft openings. Those consistently soft openings quickly endeared them to photographers. They were introduced in sizes ranging from 97 to 260. Tri' 260s were mostly sold to schools, but students landed so well under Tri' 230s. that sales for the biggest Tri never amounted to much. On the other end of the scale, the Tri 97 was supplanted by the Diablo series. Tris are good enough at Canopy Formations that Italian and Russian teams have medaled with them at world championships. The Tri' will probably be the last rectangular sport canopy to sell in significant numbers.A few years later Performance Designs entered the market with their slightly tapered Spectre. Spectres do everything - except for CReW slightly better than Tris. Other manufacturers soon introduced Spectre clones including: Icarus' Omega, Big Sky's ?, Precision's Synergy, etc. Finally, the Diablo covers the fast end of the sport 7-cell market. "That Diablo flies like a Stiletto without having to worry about the opening problems." said Ian Flanagan, a devoted Stiletto jumper. So there you have it, modern sport 7-cell canopies cover the full range between first jump students and turf surfing. Your next decision is how fast you want to land and heavy you are willing to load a canopy to achieve that speed. See threads on wing-loading to help you answer that question. PhreeZone 20 #7 December 3, 2001 QuoteBig Sky's ?Rob, I'm thinking you are probally refering to Brian Germain's Big Airsportz Lotus. Very sweet canopy from all I've heard from those looking for airlocks in a low- mid proformance canopy.I'm not sure what to put here right now..... Nash 0 #10 December 4, 2001 Rob,Did the early Triathlons open softer then the later ones? I have heard of more hard openings on Triathlons than any other canopy, and have 40 or 50 jumps on one where the openings were extremely inconsistent. I would never jump one with a camera on my head.I agree with you re. Spectres. We have several on our DZ and never a report of a hard opening, despite being packed every way imaginable.Blues,Nash
