Aviatrr 0 #26 January 9, 2002 Quote Expand and explain please? I'd hope that simply packing according to the manufacturer's instructions would avoid any potential deadly situations. The potential problem is that if there is too much volume packed into the top of the freebag, the freebag can(and has) be caught under some of the lips from the closing flaps and riser covers up at the top of the container....and to make it worse, the bridle is attached up there, so it continues to pull at such an angle(when belly to earth or head high) that the bag will not clear the reserve container.. Most riggers are aware of this, and deal with the problem by packing very little volume in the top of the freebag, and most in the bottom.. Go to the Jumpshack website, click download, then "spin test" to see a demonstration..A couple of the local riggers in my area have had Vectors come in for repacks and been able to do the same thing you'll see in the spin test video..Mike

Kris 0 #28 January 9, 2002 Okay. Um, err, ahem. That spin test video is just about the creepiest thing I have ever seen. I literally got chills watching it.KrisOff to go give my G3 a hug.
AggieDave 6 #29 January 9, 2002 Crap that's freaky! I'm jumping a Vector right now...and I'm due for a repack, definately going to ask my rigger about that one! Thank you Thank you Thank you, I never heard of this and not having good info like this can kill.Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.-General George Patton-
skymedic 0 #30 January 9, 2002 Hey Mike, I also saw that with a Mirage too..same deal...but it was the old model not the G3.....and saw the vector deal too...both at our riggers place....way freaky stuffmarc"...a mind stretched with new idea's will never regain its shape"
skybytch 273 #31 January 9, 2002 Just another reason to make sure your rigger knows his/her stuff before trusting them with your life...pull and flare,lisa--life's a bitch.. and so am I
skymedic 0 #32 January 9, 2002 thats the thing....they were rigged up by someone other than him.....he spent many years working for for RWS...so he has a purdy good clue about em...marc"...a mind stretched with new idea's will never regain its shape"
riggerrob 643 #33 January 9, 2002 Re: Vector spin test. That just goes to prove that if you pack sloppily enough, you can make any rig mal.Seriously, most rigs are more comfortable and prettier if packed thin across the top of the reserve.
riggerrob 643 #34 January 9, 2002 Nathan,My bias towards Voodoos does come from working at Rigging Innovations, but I left them in 1997, something about not wanting to move to Arizona. I moved to a place that is more moist: Vancouver! While the Voodoo reserve container is based on the Talon 2, it does have a number of minor changes. Both containers use the same "Stealth" pilotchute, that has a narrow enough spring to launch from even the narrowest containers. The Voodoo reserve is slightly thicker across the top.The big difference is in the internal flaps. Voodoos don't have internal, reserve riser covers. No great loss.Voodoos are also missing the silly internal half top flap. This half flap was the most difficult flap to control on the Talon 2 and I am glad that it is gone.Overall, the Voodoo reserve container is slightly easier to pack than a Talon 2. tlshealy 0 #36 January 9, 2002 I'm a rigger and a vector jumper, is this problem worse with small containers and larger reserves? Are these reserve sizes within the recomended range for container size? I've never seen any bulletins on this.ThanksTad
skybytch 273 #37 January 9, 2002 Quotecan you or Steve take the measurements?Heh heh heh... my favorite part of the job... measuring men.... Oh I think we need to do that inseam measurement over again... Actually where I'm at we don't do much face to face stuff; we're all phones and email. But the crew at the store on the dz can certainly help you out with that, and you're more than welcome to stop by and visit us in our little hole anytime pull and flare,lisa--life's a bitch.. and so am I

Are these reserve sizes within the recomended range for container size? I've never seen any bulletins on this. You won't see any SB's for this.. Yes, the reserves are within the recommended sizes.. After I heard about this, a friend and I grabbed his Vector when he was due for a repack, and popped the reserve.. We then put it into the freebag with as much volume as we could stuff up top.. Sure enough, when we pulled the reserve handle we were able to pull the PC/bridle all the way out until it tried to dislodge the freebag - but at an angle pulling from directly behind the jumper or from behind and above the freebag took a tremendous amount of force to pull it out of the container.. It did come out easier when the pull was from behind and below(such as a steep track deployment would be).. From what I understand, the "Micron" containers are more susceptible, but all of them are to some degree.. If you are not familiar with this, ask around and you should find a rigger that is and can show you - or you can just experiment on your own next time you repack a Vector..Mike
Aviatrr 0 #40 January 9, 2002 Quote Hey Mike, I also saw that with a Mirage too..same deal...but it was the old model not the G3..... I never saw that with a Mirage(or any rig other than a Vector), but I have seen a problem with the PC on the old Mirage.. The flap that the PC sits on top of(#2 flap, I believe - attached at the top of the container folding down) was too narrow on some of the older Mirage, allowing the bottom lip of the PC to get caught on the edge of the flap which could cause the PC to fully extend, but with the bottom caught on the flap it could cause a delayed reserve deployment or, even worse, no reserve deployment at all.. Vlad 0 #43 January 15, 2002 What I do not like about rigs :Vector3 - the riser covers are bent when you are wearing the rig, couple weekends ago my dad was renting vector from Square1, and the riser covers looked awful ! They were all bent so that closing them was hard, and they did not stay closed.Javelin : Main flap, which closes down. I've seen lots of javelins in freefall with open main flaps.Dolphin : Velcro !!! (Have not seen the new ones with velcroless riser covers).Infinity ; same as Javelin.Mirage : jumped it only once, did not noticed anything I did not like.Wings : same as Mirage, but cheaper, that's why I bought it !Reflex/Racer/Eclipse/Vortex/etc. : lack info..
