grosfion 0 #1 February 8, 2002 Hi Experts, just got my new Safire 149 and I have the impression that the steering lines are a little bit too long for my feeling. I was jumping a Omega 160 before and the flair-point was much earlier. Yes I read the article "Maximum Performance" in the Parachutist Jan 02. So are two inches (five centimeters) enough until the tail is moving (from toggle up)? Especially for that canopy?I don't have any problems to flair the canopy but I don't like to pull the toggles down to my knees... BUT if the canopy is designed like this I will handle it. So what do you guys think?bluesMarcus
PhreeZone 20 #2 February 8, 2002 Sorry... thats the design of the Safire. It's a long toggle to flare. If anything, I've seen jumpers not using front risers shorten their lines by an inch or two.On a side note... I like about 4 inches in my toggles before the tail deflates at all... skybytch 273 #3 February 8, 2002 You might want to contact Icarus to be sure, but in my experience (I put 60 jumps on a Safire 149 at about 1.1) the control range is very deep. I got the best landings on mine by having some speed on approach, flaring until I hit the "sweet spot" - where the canopy starts flying level, holding it there and continuing to fly it until I felt the canopy starting to stall (felt like a stall in an airplane), then burying the toggles and stopping. pull and flare,lisa--What would Scooby Doo? Kirils 1 #4 February 8, 2002 For what it's worth: I have a 150 Heatwave that landed too fast. I would run my but off everytime. I had an experienced rigger watch me landand they recommended taking a double wrap around my hands on the steering lines when landing. It worked quite well! I had my steering lines shortened by 6". I walk it in now! Skydiving is not a static excercise with discrete predictability...
riggerrob 643 #5 February 8, 2002 Only shorten the steering lines if you are significantly shorter than the designer.Yes the Safire 150 requires more hand movement to flare than a Sabre Mark 1, but once you have mastered the technique with stock brake lines, it surfs better than first generation Sabres. If a slow learner like me can land a Safire smoothly on the first try, the rest of you should catch on quickly.Hint, John LeBlanc (from P.D.) is taller than almost all of us, so most people shorten brake lines on PD canopies A LITTLE, say 2 to 4 inches. I want to be able to pull the front riser to my chest, toggle in hand, and not deflect the tail..Mike
