Lines Catching on Reserve PC

Recommended Posts

I send my racer to jumpshack for it's reserve repacks.. The way it comes back a line would never catch on it. It is possible for a line to catch on just about anything if your body position is bad enough at deployment. It isn't something that is really worth worrying about.. Just make it a point to be flat, stable and balanced at deployment..

Outside of crazy crew activities (one real gnarly instance I know of at Deland, but thats another story), I've never heard of this.
Thought provokin though:- Its the million to one shot that shows up 9 times out of 10.......Although I guess its been thought about by much wiser folk than I.....

I know my Dolphin is approved to be packed like a Javelin. Meaning...The bottom flap of the reserve container is closed last and put OVER the pop top. This creates a snag free surface from the bottom of the reserve container all the way up. However...I really don't think this something to be all that worried about. Good body position is crucial during deployment on any rig. Bad body position starts spinning the wheel of inumerable possibilities of deployment problems. I did hear a story of a premature (During a stand) on a wings that basically tore the reserve container almost all the way
off the harness. Moral of that story.....A half Cordura BOC has to be one of the stupidest ideas I have ever seen for a rig that claims to be "Free Fly Friendly" :)"I only have a C license, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay

That is actually one of the better BOC designs there is as long as the spandex at the mouth is nice and tight. The codura wears better and does not cause half the problems as a full spandex BOC can. If the spandex at the mounth was not maintined, then its not a design error, more like a user error....

just spandex on the mouth?

Yes....a Cordura pocket with spandex at the mouth of the pouch. It's supposed to grip the P/C and keep it inside the pouch until it is deployed. Just my .02 C but I wouldn't jump one.

As for tearing off the reserve container when you deploy in a standup. It is not unique to Wings.
I have repaired Flexon, Talon, Sidewinder, Strong Tandem, Telesis and Vector contianers that were deployed at unusual angles or by "non-conforming students." I have also mailed a couple of Javelins back the factory for the same repairs. Beginning skyboarders are also bad for tearing containers.
Any time you deploy any container - in a position that risks snagging a main riser under the corner of the reserve container - you risk tearing the reserve container off the pack tray.
The only containers that seriously address this phenomenon are the EOS and the latest Sidewinders. Older Sidewinders can be retro-fitted with side flap extensions to reduce the risk.

Clay... the only thing that is holding your PC really in is the mouth of the BOC. My old BOC was puckered in 5000 different places due to it being spandex and the PC would float in the BOC, but since the mouth was really tight I never really had to worry about it. The Codura is the same way. It has a really tight mouth and thats what holds the PC in place. If the PC is not packed deep enough in it, then its more packing error then design problem. All you need to do is make sure the PC is beyond the Spandex mouth and the Codura works better then an all Spandex BOC.

Mine started to get that way too. I replaced it.......much to the arguing of the rigger but he finally broke down. If the Spandex is in good shape it grips the entire PC not just closing it off at the mouth. If your spandex is weak and just a little comes out at 200 MPH you're done!!! Prudent rigging will save you many an injury and maybe even your life.
