Geoff 0 #2 April 17, 2002 I'm not sure of all the facts here, but here's my best recollection as no-one else has replied.I don't think skydepot exists any more, and that the Viper is not in production. Try atair http://www.extremefly.com - they produce the replacement canopy a couple of generations on which is the Cobalt. They may be able to help with the Viper or more likely sell you a Cobalt instead.Maybe someone can correct me if this is inaccurate.Geoff
SkymonkeyONE 4 #3 April 17, 2002 The Viper was a great flying parachute, but was replaced overseas with the Impulse and here in the states with the Alpha and Space (both actually european Impulses). The Cobalt is the replacement for the Impulse. I have seen quite a few Vipers in perfect shape at fantastic prices in the classifieds on this website; check it out.My webpage HERE
cobaltdan 0 #4 April 17, 2002 if you like the viper you will love the cobalt.simply many years of refinement. sincerely, danatair
skydivinmartin 0 #5 April 17, 2002 I jump a Viper 135 which I recently had relined. It flies nicely but the openings are on the hard side, and that is with a pocket installed on all four sides of the slider by the previous owner. In addition, the end cells tend to be lazy on opening. Also, my Viper was manufactured in 1995, and I have noticed that on later Vipers, Atair added spanwise reinforcing tape across the A line attachment points. (perhaps there were problems due to opening shock?) So, if you are looking to pick up a cheap elliptical (which is partly why I bought the canopy myself), maybe try and find one manufactured after 1997 or so. If you've got the cash, I'd recommend the Cobalt. I'm told the openings are great, and if you just look at a Cobalt in flight, it's a much smoother, more aerodynamic wing than the Viper. Danger 0 #6 April 18, 2002 Funny, I jump a 120 Viper (loaded 1.4) and have very soft openings. I bought it brand new in 95 and and it still flys great. Although it is time for a new line set. Not bad for my backup canopy. And it still outswoops 120 Stillettos.Danger
psw097 0 #7 April 18, 2002 The Viper's been replaced by the Cobalt. I jump a Viper 105, built in '97, I think. Openings are fine as long as you don't mind way off heading, flies great, surfs as well or better than most. There is frequently some posted for sale. I've jumped a couple Cobalts and personally I'll stick with the Viper. Performance per dollar it cannot be beat.
jerm 0 #8 April 20, 2002 i have a viper172 with ~1000 jumps that i'm getting relined. canopy itself is in good shape and is made of the nifty easy-pack southafrican ZP. Once it's back from the shop i'd sell for ~$450. opened VERY soft and flew well when it was horribly out of trim... let me know if yer intersted
