Sabre 2 150 in an Odyssey J3

Recommended Posts

I'm purchasing some new gear soon and have decided on the standard Javelin / Sabre combo; an Odyssey J3 and Sabre 2 170 to be more exact. I was wondering if anyone has put a 150 in a J3 and if there was any problems with the combo, just for future reference.
Oh the rig will also have a PD 176 reserve, which I would ideally not replace if I ever downsized to the 150 main.
Thanks for any advise.

Talk to your rigger before planning to put a PD176R in a J3 - the J3 was designed to hold a 160R/Raven I. Your rigger "might" be able to stuff a 176R in there, but don't count on it.
You can easily and safely put a 150 zp main in a J3.

I have a J2 with a 160R in it and its tight, the J3 will probally not hold a 176 and Cypres and still look nice and neat. Call Sunpath to confirm this.
As for the main, I had a Lighting 176 in my J2 this weekend with out having to change the closing loop from my normal 150 main. The J3 is larger, so there should be no problems.

I had that exact same setup some time ago and it fit fairly snug. We did end up shortening the closing loop to make it fit better, but that was it... My reserve was a pd160 even so yours should probably work out just right. However, its always best to check with a qualified rigger first.

I have a Stiletto 150 in my J3. It fits a TOUCH loose, but the nice thing about the Javelin's is that you can really tighten up the closing loop. My Stiletto 150 is fine. I imagine the Sabre2 would also be fine.

Despite what lisa just said about it being designed for a 160, and your rigger might be able to stuff a 170.... Well, I've now had 4 different riggers, none of which have complained about stuffing a Tempo 210 into mine... But the Tempo is known for packing small. While my knoledge of reserve canopies is rather limited, I suspect you won't have a problem with your 176.

I forgot to mention that I now have a J-3 loaded with a stiletto 150 and a temp 170 and it also fits fine... There is a little extra material at the bottom corners of the pack tray but it doesn't really show when all closed. Maybe a slight wrinkle or two...

I don't know about the new Odyssey but I can talk about the old javelin. I have had a Raven 181 in a J-3 for a long time and have seen pd176s in them without problems. As far as down sizing the mains go, javelins have been very good at this. It has to do with were the closing loop is attached. On the Javelin it is in the bottom of the container. This lets you close the container down a lot tighter than designed. It is more of a pain when packing though because you have to always fish your pull up cord out of the bottom of the container once you put the bag in. I have put a 120 in a j-3. If you tighten down the closing loop it will tighten as tight as you want it.
