Loosening chest strap... Why?

Recommended Posts

Hello,
Does anybody know the technical reason why some canopy manufacturers suggest that on heavily loaded canopies, ones should fly "loosening the chest strap"... like in Class 4 (and above) Icarus canopies?
If required, please look at:

Thanks!

The basic concept is that if you loosen the chest strap and you pull down your slider that the lines near your body are then able to get more lateral separation with the result being that the canopy will then be able to flatten out somewhat and thereby improve performance.
That said, it's debatable how much this would actually improve the performance of most canopies.

I asked John Le Blanc couple of years ago similar question,
here is the answer:

>The long chest strap helps in a couple of ways, but it is not necessary to
>have it dangling and flopping around, as some people do. One the rig has
>spread to the extent allowed by the yoke area of the harness (and/or slider
>width,)then more slack doesn't do anything.
>
>The canopy can spread out slightly more with the chest strap wide and the
>slider pulled down. This made a big difference on the older nine cells such
>as the older Glidepath F-111 stuff, and the PD and Sabre, but it makes less
>difference on the newer ellipticals, like the Stiletto and newer.

>There is a big difference in the handling of the canopy with the chest
>strap
>adjusted wide. The ability to steer with the harness increases when the rig
>is allowed to spread. The center of the pivot is down near your hips,
>making
>the harness control pressures very low. When the cheststrap is pulled
>tight,
>the center of the pivot is up near the three rings, and your wieght is far
>below this. This means it takes more effort to steer with the harness. This
>in turn means you must deflect some other control surface (toggle or riser)
>more, which reduces efficiency.
