safire openings?

Recommended Posts

I am jumping a slightly loved saphire 189...love the canopy...finaly figuring out the flare...just wish I could tame down the openings...sometimes there sweet...most of the time though....it's a pretty big bang....and i know my pro pack is VERY clean...rolling the nose...psychoing it...seems to have not helped at all...not sure what else to do...thanks for any hints...

Marc,

Are you sure you are not still in your track when you dump? My Safire opens very consistently slowly, the only time I've have even a remotely hard opening was when I was.

Heck, about 25% of the time I have to pump the rear risers to open my end cells, it is so slow
! Does it have Spectra or Vectran lines? Not saying it makes a difference, I haven't noticed any since I switched to Spectra, but it may. The only other thing I can suggest is to have the trim checked out -- slamming Safires are like slamming Spectres from what I have seen -- few and very far between.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

I jump a "slightly loved" safire too and it opens soft every time, I actually have to do a deep flare with the rear risers to get the slider to come all the way down. But my rigger also said the slider is HUGE, so someone may have put a bigger one on b/c it was slamming them. Call Icarus and ask them about it, maybe you could get a little bit bigger slider.[reply

I'm jumping a Safire 149 w/ Derek's mod. loaded at around 1.4 and love it...

Before the mod I was consistently getting 400 foot openings, not hard by any means...

After the mod I'm now getting 600-800 feet openings that are feather soft. I've found myself pulling in a track just to speed up the openings a little bit sometimes for fun...

Other Safire jumpers at my DZ just roll the noses of their canopy and get good slow openings...

I jump a Safire 189 loaded at around 1.3 or 1.4 depending on how you measure it. Anyway, my openings are usually soft and on heading. I think the only hard openings I've had are where I was a bit sloppy with the slider. I use a regular Psycho pack, and don't bother doing anything special with the nose.

How many jumps are on the canopy? It may be time for a reline. Like jceman said you might have to much speed during opening make sure you bleed it off before you dump. Does it have the right size slider? Check it and call icarus to make sure it is the right one. If all else fails i would speak to icarus and get them to check the canopy you may also be able to get a larger than normal slider but i would speak to them about it.
In the 100 jumps i have put on my safire 139 i have not had 1 hard opening, they have all been very sweat. My packing has not been the best and it has still treated me nice. I do not roll the nose or use any techniques to slow it down like i would on the sabre.

according to Lisa at square one the reline was very recent. it has about 350 jumps on it. after getting Derek's PM I am going to send to him for the mod. the thing just hurts too damn much...it is opening in the 300-400 foot range...just a little too quick for my sore over worked back....thanks for the suggestions guys...

Here's the info Derek sent me on the mod:

Quote

What is it?: Replacement of the upper steering lines
with a new trim design. I will use Vectran or
Spectra, whichever your canopy is currently lined
with, unless you request other wise.

What differences will it make in my Safire?: The
performance option slows the openings on Safires and
improves the flare of the canopy. There is no
performance degradation.

i have safire2-149 loaded at 1.45. i don't roll the nose, i don't psycho it. it opens too slow for me.
i'm in process of swaping slider for smaller one, since i prefer more brisk openings and don't like
pumping slider down :)

oh yeah...my Safire also has the largest slider I have ever seen on a parachute...it seems like it is as big as some tandem sliders...that should have been my first clue as to it's.....umm...opening charecteristics...

i was thinking the other day about how big slider effects the opening. i'm not sure excatly at what
point of opening the slamming happens.

on one hand bigger slider will stay up longer and thus making canopy spread slower and more
be more soft on you. on the other hand, since it's bigger it will let the canopy to spread to its
width right away and that itself may cause slamming.

and safire2 slider is truly big. i think that's why sizes are 149, 169. it's actually 150 and 170
becasue of additional surface ! :) and collapsed slider doesn't want to stay behind my head,
it's too big !

anyway, my new smaller slider is on its way ! :)
