Experimental russian canopy formed nose on end cells?

Recommended Posts

OK..:S
My friend Nikolai (absent this weekend) lent a canopy to my friend Catfish.

It was a russian 9 cell, canopy with no labels of any sort on there for me to read (yes I can read rusky yazik). He thought it was like a 120 ish sized canopy. I seem to remember the words 9 meters (if that was area that is 97 feet which is damn small)

The canopy's 5 center cells were open to the wind like normal, the 2 end cells on either side were fully closed off (formed edge like a wing) and had to be inflated internally from the cross ports.

the canopy was highly, highly elipitical (leading edge and trailing edge), from the ground it looked sort of like a paraglider but a little shorter.

nice openeings..Extreme over steer (small toggle movements to induce a 90 turn could result in 180s).

very very short recovery arc...100-150 '. front riser pressure was ridiculously high.

Catfish (lots of jumps on weird canopies) was unable to land it nicely on a straight in approach. Several attempts to hook would result in a plane out 30-40 feet too high, and then a glide to landing with seemingly inefective flare(this was a botched swoop I saw him earlier attempt to land it nicely and as he flared it would just plop him on the ground...it was ZP).

Does anyone know what this canopy is...how much it is supposed to be loaded?

side note..if it was 120 ish...catfish was loading this at 1.8ish.

I know what are you talking about.
The canopy is called Golf.
The only size is 120sq ft.
The guy whom I saw jumping it on Borki dropzone in Russia, had weight aroun 85-90 kg.
90kg is stated to be maximum suspended weight.
The canopy is really weird, very twitchy and looks like an arc from the front. The guy who was jumping it was doing toggle hook turns to land it, 'cos he the riser pressure was too heavy, though his thinking of canopy conrol is limited by toggles only. B|

Safe swoops,
Andrew
P.S. It is bounce that hurts, so grab the grass .....

Wow. It exactly matches the Jane's All The World's Aircraft Spotter's Guide general guidelines for determining the country of origin.

#1 If it's weird -- it's French
#2 If it's ugly -- it's British
#3 If it's ugly and weird -- it's Russian

Glad to see the Russians haven't lost their touch for color coordination.

max wing loading on the website for that canopy was 1.65, I think fish was loading it 1.8-1.9.

He offered to let me jump it (at 1.85ish) and i said thanks, but no f*&%ing, way;)

It was the Golf model.:D

khtov and Fefe guessed the right one.

The bekrut is similar but looks like an accuracy version and the vzhik looks like a FX copy (does not have closed no load bearing center cells like fX et all). maybe it is really a ninja copy.

FYI, Catfish has been jumping a vzhik also and says it has a very low turn radius.B|

thanks guys it has been very interesting looking at those canopies.
