Risers

Recommended Posts

Kind of an odd topic, but I just bought a used Vector II with a Silhouette Main and was wondering about my risers. I have no idea what "type" they are and the manuals do not say. I had read that "type 17" risers were prone to tearing occasionally and wondered if I should replace mine if thats what they are (I have an RSL so you see my concern). They look fine. Have you guys even heard of riser tears on single occupant canopies? Can you guys help me or am I just being paranoid?

Most of the type 17's that were of the design that had issues are old and have been replaced. Type 17's are 1 inch wide mini risers compared to the other wider 8 risers. A simple way to tell is look on your mini risers at the base and see if there is binging tape between the riser layers, if so then they are the updated type 17's if they don't have the tape they might be the older 17's. I'm not aware personally of type 8's ever having a problem, but I have'nt been around that long either.

And if you have questions, call the Relative Workshop since they invented most the compnents on the risers you have and if they came with the container they made them.

If you have reinforced, 1", type 17 risers you have little to worry about. I have only heard of one breaking, ever...in millions and millions of jumps. As was said above, reinforced risers can be identified by color coded 1', type 3 tape, sandwiched into the lower section of the riser.
