yarik 0 #1 May 28, 2002 Guys, anyone knows where I can find source of information on aerodynamics of ram-air parachutes? Some time ago I studied a lot of aerodynamics of jet planes which I flew and loved the subject. Now I'm in skydiving and feel a need to learn some theory of ram air flying. Would appreciate any reply.
SkydiveMonkey 0 #2 May 28, 2002 As far as I know, they operate exactly the same way, but a canopy has a fixed angle of incidence (unless you're playing with the risers). Let's go play chicken with a planet !!
polarbear 1 #3 May 28, 2002 There are some good sources of information. The parachute manual has some basic information. A guy named Jerry Sobieski wrote a short thesis on the aerodynamics and piloting of high-performance parachutes...go to yahoo.com and search for "Jerry Sobieski Parachute" and you'll find it.Also, Bryan Burke wrote some good stuff on parachutes. I think you can find it on the Skydive Arizona website somewhere.

steellex 0 #5 May 29, 2002 Check out the Mar 02 issue of Parachutist magazine. The article "The Fine Art of Swoop Survival" by Kevin Gibson gives quite a good write-up on ram-air aerodynamics.
