Canopy downsize progression

Recommended Posts

Student stuff to PD-190 @ .9 Jump 35
Spectre 170 @1.1 to 200 jumps (2nd year)
Cobalt 150 @1.25ish 240+ jumps (440+ total) and still liking it. (All in the 3rd year)

I've demoed stuff from Stiletto 120's, Samurai 136, Lightnings etc also but I still like having a main that I know and can do what I want with it.

Try this thread. I think there are a couple of older ones in the archives as well.

Since I never answered any of those:
Skymaster 230s and 290s, sky barges, 30 jumps or so.
Sabre 2 170, new, nice, swoopy, 2 jumps.
Sabre 170, couldn't read the warning label to check the DOM, dogged out, 2 jumps.
Spectre 170 @ 1.1:1, orange, beautiful, mine all mine, jump 34 to present.

I don't plan on downsizing anytime soon, but I may switch to a 9-cell next summer. We'll see.

skymaster 270 (0.75) = 50 jumps
PD 9-cell 210 (1.0) = 120 jumps
spark 190 (1.1) = 10 jumps
atair cobalt 170 (1.25) = 20 jumps
atair impulse (alpha) 135 (1.55) = 50 jumps
atair impulse (alpha) 120 (1.75) = 1 jump

I wouldn't recommend wing loading that big (1.55 - 1.75) at 250 jumps, unless there is almost nobody else in the air (avoiding traffic problems) when you jump and you are smart enough not to start thinking that you know this canopy becauseyou have 50 jumps on it and starting to learn hook turns !!! you have to know that this canopy can kill (i hope i got that in my brain for at least 200 jumps :S)

Don't do what I did unless you are heavily supervised. Most of the downsizing took place at a huge DZ with an enormous landing area and lots of room for error. It would be extremely dangerous to downsize this fast (even supervised) at a dZ with a small landing area.B|

student canopies 280-215 30 jumps
Triathlon 175 (@1.28) 150 jumps
Stilleto 170 ( 1.3) 40 jumps
Space 150 (1.5) 180 jumps
Vengeance 135 (1.65) 175 jumps (back up rig)
Extreme FX 109 (2.0) 175 jumps
Extreme VX 97 (2.2) 80 jumps (distance)

DISCLAIMER: NOT RECOMMENDED PROGRESSION
I Took risks on the edge of my ability but was conservative enough that I did not injure myself. There are few people I have talked to that I would ever recommend this progression to.

Student Canopies (1-15)
FCI Pro Series 170 (16-120) 1.1:1 (6 months)
Nitron 150 (121-124)
Nitron 135 (125-140)
Nitron 120 (141-350) 1.6:1 (5 months)
Velocity 120 (~20 jumps) 1.6:1
Velocity 111 (~10 Jumps)
(~25 jumps)
Velocity 103 (400 - 530) 1.85:1 (Last 3 Months)

well I am not a fan of the cobalt. the samuri seemed more twitchy and more ground hungry.. the cobalt had much lighter front riser pressure and if I remember correctly about the same toggle stroke. the cobalt 120 that I jumped (with exit weight about 190-200) had no bottom end flare. I couldnt swoop the thing worth a damn.. perhaps it was my own input, but I can get pretty long swoops out of other stuff similar. maybe it is the design of the canopy itself. Perhaps it just needs flown differently?? I am not sure.. with as many jumps as I have had on it I thought that I should be able to figure it out ok, but I couldnt really fly the cobalt in the range that I wanted to or that I fly other canopies in... anyways if you are deciding between those 2 specificly i would suggest the samuri...more so the crossfire 2.. that is an awesome canopy...

i started about a year ago, have 225 jumps to date

Manta 288 - 30 jumps (.86)
Sabre 210 145 jumps (1.18)
Sabre 170 45 jumps and counting (1.45)

Soon to come Cobalt 170, I'm going to stay with my current wing loading for the time being, but would like a canopy with more performance

Flare when you hear the crick... thump, roll, bounce, crap, ouch

Flash
