I like getting other people's perspectives on doing things differently and finding out their reasoning. SkymonkeyONE 4 #53 June 5, 2003 QuoteAre you saying your view is that Stilettos don't like front riser turns? Well, if he doesnt' I will. My Stiletto 107, for whatever reason, and with having the brakes let out plenty, did not handle well in front riser dives. I jumped that main for nearly six years. I am sure it was out of trim and that that was probably the problem, but at any rate I generally toggle whipped it. It was what everybody I jumped with did at the time and, like Tonto, I was very proficient at it even though I didn't like to do it. When I downsized to a ST 97 I didn't have that problem That canopy dove very nicely in risers and that's what I did with it until I sold it (quite a few years ago). ManBird 0 #54 June 6, 2003 Did you have your brake lines lengthened? Were your dive handles high enough? Did you eat an entire cake in freefall? I thought my Sabre hated freont risers until I did these things... well, two anyway."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
SkymonkeyONE 4 #55 June 6, 2003 I would have loved to have had a lemon pound cake with me to munch on, but such was not the case on any of those dives. Yes, my brakes were very long and my dive loops were plenty high. I was pretty miffed actually. I had already owned five swooping canopies prior to that first Stilleto: an Excallibur, two Monarch 135's and two Sabre 135's. I did riser dives on all of those with no problem. Like I said, it was just that one canopy. I did what I had to do to get a nice swoopy out of it.
tattoojeff 0 #56 June 10, 2003 i agrree 700 feet in a 180 seems a bit much
ptwob231 0 #57 June 13, 2003 Stilleto 135 @ 1.33 out the door does about 400ft in a 180 using this method: 50% brakes, surge, uneven double fronts to start a carving turn, stop turn with even double fronts at the end of the 180 and release smoothly. flare as necessary
chopchop 0 #58 July 15, 2003 Quote but a more realistic number for non x-brace canopies is proabably 200', and X-brace is probably 400'. As always, your actual useage may vary, and planets coming up at you may appear larger than actual size. Tree I've only just started swooping (300 HP landings or so) but even i know that a front riser 180 started at 200' under a SabreII loaded at 1.5 or a Stiletto loaded at 1.7 will have the same result... SPLAT! You have got to be kidding... I am also thankful to hear that others are using their altimeters as well as sight picture to decide when to start their turn... For me.. just a nudge over 500'.. chopchop gotta go... Plaything needs a spanking.. Lotsa Pictures
rhino 0 #59 July 16, 2003 QuoteMy Velocity 79 goes 700 feet through a 270 with not much harness input. I can easily throw my turn at 1000 feet though and come out clean, without going to double fronts at all. It all depends on how much I slow the canopy down before throwing my turn, plus the degree of harness steer I put in. My 75 Velocity dives a bit harder, but, once again, I throw my 270 from between 700 and 1000 feet. That velocity sounds fun.. What are your loadings on them? SkymonkeyONE 4 #60 July 16, 2003 I changed my quiver a bit a few months ago and replaced the 75, which I ended up rarely jumping, for a Sabre2 97. The Sabre2 is my BirdMan main and it rules in that regard. The bigger of my two original Velocities, the 79, just worked out perfect for everything else. I load it at about 2.2 without weights. It goes as fast as I want it to go, has great range to get back from long AFF spots, swoops fantastically, and opens great. Actually, it was the main that I had intended primarily for BirdMan usage, with the 75 for "everything else." While the 75 was a fun canopy, I get much longer swoops on the 79. While most people wouldn't consider a Sabre2 a "performance" canopy, I can tell you that at the wingload I use mine at, it's awesome. Incredibly light riser pressure, straight openings, and remarkably long swoops. Plus mine looks really cool in the team clolors.
