ManBird 0 #1 October 27, 2003 http://www.deepart.org/sight/the_carnage_round.wmv OK, they aren't all chows. The distance swooping competition at this year's Freedom Jam went terribly awry. Amazingly, the participants all walked away without a scratch, but left us some really nice carnage footage."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
FreeFlyFridge 0 #2 October 28, 2003 Hmm, somehow it won´t work for me! My Media Player is loading it and I can hear the sound but have no picture and I don´t get an error warning or something. What could that be? Does anyone else have this problem? 3.. 2.. 1.. C-YA!------------------------------------------------------ ROCK ON,.....HARD! Proud European!! ManBird 0 #3 October 28, 2003 Did you try DLing it first and then playing it from your machine? Media Player does that for me, too, when I try to stream a file, on occasion."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
FreeFlyFridge 0 #4 October 28, 2003 Yep, tried that! Doesn´t work, maybe my WMP needs a codec or something like that, but it doesn´t show any error report. if I try to play it with a different player (VLC, which normally works with wmv-files) it show´s this error report: main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'. Any ideas? 3.. 2.. 1.. C-YA!------------------------------------------------------ ROCK ON,.....HARD! Proud European!!
ManBird 0 #5 October 28, 2003 Weird. I even made the video with Microsoft Movie Maker (a new plug-in I installed for Premiere 6.5 KILLED it, and I haven't found my disc yet). You'd think there wouldn't be a compatibility issue. ;) I'm uploading the high res version to skydivingmovies.com right now. The encoding is a little more straight forward. There's not much compression, so the file size is big, but the quality is worth it."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
FreeFlyFridge 0 #6 October 28, 2003 i think i´ll try it again with the vid at skydivingmovie.com. Maybe that works? No problem on download time, got double dsl. Yeah, maybe your microsoft stuff doesn´t like my apple stuff!? Thank´s anyway, and cool music on that vid, that´s all i can say right now!! 3.. 2.. 1.. ManBird 0 #7 October 28, 2003 That's "My Week Beats Your Year" by Telefon Tel Aviv from their album, "Map of What Is Effortless", scheduled to be released at the end of January 2004. You'll be able to get it here (we got an advance copy). It's different than most of their stuff, but all their stuff is good. I didn't even noticed after putting the music in that the first line is, "I stepped off the plane and it was so fresh." :)"¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

ManBird 0 #9 October 28, 2003 Quotethat was a cool video...........probly not cool for that last guy though, you could seee that coming for milesLiterally. When he was still at about a grand, he was pretty far out and we were saying, "he'll be low by the time he gets over here." By the time he got there, people were screaming, "ABORT! ABORT!". Once he made the turn, you just hear, "No no no no no no no no no no no no no." They all made it without a scratch, though. Even the gear (cameras, Cypreses, etc). skydivingmovies.com is not being cooperative with the big version. Argh."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
MrHixxx 0 #10 October 28, 2003 Cool Video! I hope the guy on the Cobalt at the end learned something from his F!#$up. That is one of the hardest (at least steepest) pond strikes I have seen. Looks like it would have been a life taker over dirt... ManBird 0 #11 October 28, 2003 Yeah. That scared the shit out of a lot of people, myself included. But since he's OK, we can laugh at it on video (and learn from it, as well)."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
ianmdrennan 2 #12 October 28, 2003 You may have already seen it, but this is Andy Anderson (last year I believe) at the NE swoop meet. Walked away scott free....damn miracle if you ask me. Clicky Blue skies ianPerformance Designs Factory Team
ManBird 0 #13 October 28, 2003 Holy crap! Thank God he had his landing gear behind him. Looks like he was just getting on the rear risers when he pounded in. Damn."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
ianmdrennan 2 #14 October 28, 2003 I believe he stated it was object fixation. The big black hole sure can suck you in. We've watched the vid a million times and from that angle it's hard to see if he was still on the fronts or had just gone to the rears. Glad he came out ok though, but still a good lesson for us all to heed....making the target/pond is good, but it ain't worth dying for. blue skies, be safe, and see you in Eloy IanPerformance Designs Factory Team
MrHixxx 0 #15 October 28, 2003 Yeah, I have seen that. However, if you notice it is not a pond strike. He hit the sand and somersaulted into the water. This is striking evidence that he cannot be killed by conventional weapons. He is one tough Mother!#@$. velo90 0 #17 October 29, 2003 Unbelievable that someone could walk after that. What I also found interesting was the guy in the red T-shirt who just after Andy hit, put his hands on his head and turned away, as if he was thinking "too late for first aid on that one"
Spizzzarko 0 #18 November 4, 2003 The thing I noticed the most about all of the people in the video was how low they were turning. The best way to get more speed is to start up higher and be smoother. whipping a low turn isn't going to get you any cool points in my book.
ematteo 0 #19 November 6, 2003 Yeah, I f#$%’d up . I set up downwind, with a moderate breeze blowing down the course. I hung out too long getting back up to the entry point and turned in way low. Attached is a still of the chow (should clearly have aborted) and one of another guy that round. FWIW, my normal swoop-way is asphalt. Never done anything like that here. Thanks to the Oregon folks who dried me out, loaned me gear and, most importantly, caught this on film.
ianmdrennan 2 #20 November 6, 2003 Quotemy normal swoop-way is asphalt. Never done anything like that here. Spizzzarko 0 #21 November 6, 2003 I like to look at the horizon. It gives me a much better idea of altitude. Try it.
ianmdrennan 2 #22 November 6, 2003 Sorry - didn't mean to imply that I look at the pond, just that I was warned not to (and did on one of my swoops) and sure enough - sucked right in (not into the pond, but ended up flaring a little late and digging - sucky swoop). I look at the horizon as well, and also try and take in info from my periphirals. Good tip. Blue skies IanPerformance Designs Factory Team
Spizzzarko 0 #23 November 6, 2003 I gazed into the pond one day (Perris Swoop Sewer Pond), and went into it in my first and subsequently only swoop contest to date. I had a new Odyssy, new 126R, new FX104, and cypress. I turned to low, caught an air blade, ran out of lift, and the princess of the pond reached out and got me. I looked like swamp thing coming out of it. It was slightly embarrasing.

ManBird 0 #25 November 7, 2003 A recent e-mail about this vid had me thinking. The comment was, "Another valuable learning tool from the swooping community." I don't know if this was meant to be taken seriously or not, but it is true. This video is fun to watch, mainly because no one was hurt. But I've actually learned a lot from it. Something else that really hits home for me on this video is the philosophy that you WILL get low some times. The people in this video are pretty dang heads up in general and some of those chows came from people with four digits in jump numbers. It happens. People get low. This video is something I will reference next time I select a canopy or even when setting up from a swoop. I've bailed out of at least a few swoops since (ie, 90 instead of 270, or just flat turned), and on each, this video actually flashed in mind as I did so. It's also a strong affirmation that swooping should be practiced over water... it saved lives that day. Target fixation on the pond contributes to these kind of chows. In this case, though, a another big contributor to the high number of chows in a single round was that the spot on the hop and pop load was a little off... enough to make some people (especially at the back end of the load) a little low by the time they got to their setup point (from what I observed and heard from others... I was there, but not in the plane). Sometimes judgement is replaced by desire. Shit happens, people get low, and a nice deep pond saves their lives. It's saved my legs twice. I also can't help but point out that Grasshopper (second to last in the video), did a great job of landing in the right direction/staying in the flight pattern/traffic, getting some swoop, but also bailing out a bit because he was low."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
