Your longest swoop using a 5' gate

Recommended Posts

I just saw a post on what's your wind limit to jump in and I thought I'd post this question!

What is your longest swoop using 5' gates. ok most people dont' have 5' gates at their dz but assuming you pass your toes through the gates how far did you go.

My self it was 575' on a 5'gate and on a 20' gate on the same jump was 775'. With Video too.

It was 30mph downwind of course.

Stood a few up, not all. Mostly sliding in on my as*.
Bryan will be out here tomorrow I guess.
Swooping the cliffs--it won't be done by just anyone.
I don't want anyone to end up like Dwain at the bridge.

I have seen him stand up some very impressive downwinders (20mph+) I have some video somewhere, but the only one I can find is one he did not stand up. But the winds were doing about 22mph that day. If you tell me how or where to upload a nice size file, I will.

I would be very interested in these videos as well. When they talk about the record swoop being 418' (I think), how are they defining it? Obviously it must be a much tighter requirement than a 5' gate if you're breaking 500' by this standard.

The "record" to my knowledge was done 10mph downwind though... I guess there are no rules about wind in distance considerations. But 30mph downwind sounds crazy. Assuming you need to slow down to 10mph groundspeed to run it out, that would mean you flew your canopy from full airspeed, down to zero, and then all the way down to a negative airspeed of 20mph. Is this possible? Or did you land with 30mph groundspeed?

Matt, you cannot cancel downwind speed; only airspeed. Nobody in their right mind would try and run out a 30mph downwinder, but plenty have surfed them out on their asses or feet. 418 is the measured competition distance record through five foot gates (the standard for Pros). That does not mean that people haven't ripped downwinders longer than that at their home DZ's in practice.

Hopefully I will dig some out and try to upload those videos. The WR is 418 and it was at Perris Valley last yr and the winds to my knowledge were 3-5mph.
In order to record the WR it has to be less than 5mph. I would not try to run it out. I was in the midwest and the landing area was ausome/Grass and flat! I would slid on my feet for about 30-50'.
Most of the time I ended up on my as* but a few I slid on my shoes and didn't touch anything else. My ground speed was probably 10-15mph when I started sliding? I really don't know, the last 30-50' sliding on feet!
I tried a downwind landing when I was working in NE and the It was 20mph and I tried to run it out instead of sliding(rocky/grassy landing area)
that one resulted in a separated shoulder. I learned my lesson! IF you going to be stupid you better be tough!

I went to upload but it wouldn't let me upload?

the sampling of Clint doing downwinders is on ftp.skydivingmovies.com. It is called Clint and the mighty winds. There is another video worth checking out called moabian cliff swoopers.

Enjoy!

Is the WR from touch down, or from full stop? I'm not sure how comp. swooping works, I always thought it was from touch down, but that's an assumption, and well...
