jumping 155 what next

what should i be aiming to change too from a zp.exe 155 loading 1.17

at 100 jumps my aim is to be downsizing in another 100 (only a few months away)

your choice please
A)should my next step be eliptical 150 or
B)down a size in the same shape 135 (sabre esque)

i want more distance from my surf and want to get into swooping from now on in

options please !

If you have only 100 jumps then I would recommend you to stay with your 155 and to improve your basics before you go elliptical or on 135 canopy otherwise it is not unlikely that you will find your self very soon in hospital ...
I think it makes no sense to change your canopy at only 100 jumps because what you want to jump are canopies people jump who are quite experienced ... If you have up to 300 jumps you can think about once more ...

A great place to start would be your S&TA's recommendation.

Also aim for advice from canopy instuctors who are training you as your skills are advancing.

Then of cousre there's the 2004 SIM, section 6-10, which recommends guidelines for advanced canopy flight and and downsizing progression.

-which btw, recommends that downsizing to the same/similar canopy design be done only after accomplishing proficiency in using the current canopy and all of its control inputs under a variety of conditions.

I don't intend to give advice on which canopy you should choose (I don't know you and I don't have enough experience), but I think the above statement should be rephrased, as it makes it sound as if a downsize you're considering will probably put you in hospital;
imo, you won't necessary hurt yourself on either a 150 elliptical or 135 square. You will, however, have a canopy that is less forgiving of your mistakes. The tolerance for pilot error goes down as wingloading increases, which is why even the pros sometimes get hurt. You need to ask yourself (and preferrably someone else, too) if your skills and you personally are ready for the increased risk.

Oh yeah... One other thing... According to your profile... you say you're already jumping a "Stiletto 150?" Weird, but what "eliptical" were you thinking of moving into? And where does the "155" thing come from?

Also, if perhaps you have updated your canopy information, why not update your jump information as well -equally weird. ...So at 51 jumps you're B.A.S.E. jumping and what-not? Or is that just something you would like to get into as well, seeing as you have moved from style and accuracy into swooping in 51 jumps??

My opinion is that you should really just ignore my whole last post and find a nice VX maybe something in the 69-79 range and then, 'Surfs Up Man!!!'

Don't think I have forgotten about your PM to me. I had a really nice "Ticklist" of swoop things to work on worked up for you but my wifes computer crashed when I hit the send button, so I'm working up the gumption to write it all again. Maybee I'll post it so everyone can look at it. Here's the red and blue lights of the canopy police flashing for ya. hahahaha I would try to find a 150 elliptical and jump it as much as you can so you can find out the differences between the two, then down size after you feel comfortable. I think distance comes more from technique than from a smaller canopy, but there is something to be said about the proper wing loading. I'm now going to go and drink some beer. Every one else have a good night.

i've got another 100 jumps i want to do on the 155. needed something to talk about so thought i thought i'd ask what i should be loooking at doing

Agreed, although 134 jumps on a canopy before moving on doesn’t seem like all that many to me.

Wayne, by all means think about what you might get next but don’t set yourself timescales by which you need to get something else and enjoy learning as much as you can about your current canopy in the meantime. I did over 400 jumps on my 1st canopy and I learnt a vast amount from it – looking back I’m glad I waited to downsize.

The best advice I can give you is to take a canopy control course and seek the advice of experienced canopy pilots who know your abilities.

Hey man...im 165lbs...from about jump 30 or so, to about jump 200 ive been jumpnig a sabre and sabre 2 170. im about 1 to 1.1 out the door.

If your looking to come in fast, ever try front risers on ur final?? just tug on them for alittle it can pick u up some speed, esp on no wind days. Why I say that is that even on my big as canopy that looks like a tandem compared to others at the DZ, i can usually put it in the peas anytime i want. if you know your canopy well enough, you can make it fly. I watched jimmy tranter (maybe 135 lbs) a few weeks ago, fly a sabre 2 170 test jumping and was swooping and carving a ton! i didnt think my canopy could do that!

another thing....i was jsut talking the other day about a rig i might by...i might get it to fit a 150 so i can downsize, and the next jump i got a bad spot (my fault) and had to land no where near the landnig area. I felt confident on my canopy that i can put where i wanted it. I didnt even know which way the winds were comming because they were changing, i ended up landing almost downwind in 10-15mph winds. and i was fine...someone once told me...unless u can take ur canopy and land downwind on any day in any wind situation, you aernt ready to fly a smaller one.

It is not a case of the canopy police coming to get you but people trying to keep you out of the incident reports.
A decent canopy pilot can get anything to fly well -one pro-swoop tour entrant has been seen swooping a Fury 220 on a waterjump. Observers were left asking what it was he was jumping and were surprised when they found out.

You should be pushing the limits of your canopy before you downsize and that will take a lot of jumps. It is not the canopy but the pilot that makes the swoop look cool.

ontop of what wayneRATS said, we have a guy at our DZ who has over 1000 jumps just this summer. Awsome swooper. I am not sure what canopy he is jumping but the point im trying to make is, its the same exact once since jump 100 or so for him. He used to be able to put a soccer ball out in the middle of the field, and kick on on a swoop. There is something to try if u get bored with ur canopy! Canopy soccer! Set someone up as a goalie too! haha
