front riser turns

Recommended Posts

I've jumped my new rig 7 times so far. It's a Falcon 175 loaded at a little less than 1:1. My question is how far do you have to pull down on the front riser to really make it dive and turn? I just can't seem to get the performance I think I should have. Is it the canopy or am I not doing something the way I should, or am I just expecting too much?

Although you can get your canopy to turn using front risers, a Falcon 175 loaded at 1:1 will not dive much at all. If you are just experimenting with front risers to learn the aspects of your canopy, then just continue to play with them up high and see what they do with more input. But if you are expecting to be able to get alot of performance out of it such as dives, then you are simply expecting too much from it. Plus I think you would be a little ahead of yourself to even be attempting anything like that if your profile is correct.

At your level, Learning to STEER with risers is great. But trying to do high performance maneuvers, may be a bit much. Talk to someone at your DZ who knows your experience level who can tell you what you should be working on.

Thanks for the info. I have no urge to do any high performance stuff yet. Thats all I am trying to do is to figure out the finer points of my canopy.

Front riser turns are not one of the finer points of that particular canopy;)

That may be true. But it's still possible to get a Falcon @1.0 to dive with front risers (not much, but you can definitely feel it), and if you're stupid, you can also hook yourself into the ground quite efficiently. (Been there, done that, learned my lesson.)

My brother would hook his falcon 195 at about 100-200 feet....you could see his legs come into the video he would hammer it so much. im sure he got as much of a surf out of it as anyone could get....musta been at least 20 feet.....:P

oh I forgot to mention this was front riser hook...incase some of you thought it was a toggle turn. He and I had identical falcon 195's. I flew his one day and was very suprised at how differently they flew from one another. You couldn't hook mine like you could his. hmmm....wonder if I have a pic of his legs around....hold on.

Really? I can get 50 feet out of my Ace and my Black Jack 240 at .75 wingload. Not every time though :$

I jumped a 195 falcon for a while and it's no swoopmonster but you can learn some good stuff on it.

Basic front riser skills.
Accuracy
Some Basic CRW

Also it's great fun to stall for long periods of time at altitude. Back spins are quite fun too.
