Underloading an Eliptical?

Recommended Posts

Not a great deal. Underloading an eliptical or crossbraced canopy is a waste of not only money, but time

I'll second that, when you get outside of the canopies designed wing loading, up or down, you loose the advantages of its design. In the end it comes down to "what's the point of buying it then?" If its money, you can find great deals on canopies all the time as long as you’re willing to look. I'd tell her to wait till a canopy comes along that fits her needs better.

I have flown a Crossfire 1, Crossfire 2, Cobalt, Stiletto, and samurai, all 120 sq ft or smaller at 1.1-1.3 and they all flew just fine. The stilettos and cobalt would breath quite a bit in turbulance though.

I don't think there is any reason she can't do it, she just might not get all the performace out of it as she could something at a higher WL.

As far as I know there is only one elliptical on the market that shoudn't be loaded below 1.2 and it has 2 tilted squares on it.

Care to elaborate? Honestly, just curious as to why you think that.

I was told that by CobaltDan himself when I mentioned some things about the canopy I didn't like. He told me I was underloading it at 1.1 and needed to be at 1.2 or higher. *shrug* never did get around to jumping it at a higher WL.

Found the post where Dan says 1.2 is the min.

Thats what Dan told my gf after he sent her a 170 to demo and she had half a collapse on final in no winds.

She is about 155 out the door.

Didnt seem inportant enough to mention before, I guess. No matter though.

Does aerodyne even still make the diablo? It's not on their website.

No Sir, after Aerodyne was consumed by Aerodyne International, the Devil called and wanted his name back, so we had to stop producing the Diablo.

Please send me an email if you would like any information on our newly designed products. (mostely designed without the help of Satan)

Recommended wing loading on the crossfire 2 is 1.4-2.1 thats from Icarus.

I don't think that is a safety issue as much as getting the proper performance from the canopy that is advertised and is designed for. I jumped a teamates 129 crossfire-1 loaded a little over 1.4 and it was a slug

I've put about 100 jumps or so on my stiletto 150. Loaded about 1.2, Its my first ellipticle and I've been told that its about as light as I should go. Its been a fun canopy to jump and I'll step down to a 135 some time this year. B|

I know someone that jumps a stiletto 150 loaded at under 1.0. Other than the incredibly slow forward speed, insane riser pressure, and not having to ever run out a landing, the canopy performed well. With enough determination it's still swoopable, though. Flying in moderate to high winds was the only real hazzard to speak of, but good planning and awareness can counter that (it's still no fun).
