is this "giving up"

Recommended Posts

So this weekend, we hosted a little competition at x-keys. The fee was 10 bucks plus 2 hop and pop tickets($13 each).

At first I wasn't even going to enter. I said, "I don't need to pay ten bucks to find out that Danny Koon is a better canopy pilot than me." But then I figured what the hell, it sounds like fun.

There were two rounds. On the first round, one of the other locals got hosed on the spot and posted a goose egg. I set up pretty well, but when I went to execute the turn I missed the front riser 3 times in a row and ended up coming up short, so I also posted a goose egg....

On the second round, me and the other jumper with a big fat zero in the first round elected to tank it and took a down winder over the pond. Which I gotta say, was fucking fun as shit.

Some people accused us of quitting or giving up....We felt like we went out in style. We could have gone for the course and tried to reedeem ourselves, but I figure we can do that next week since we are going to be doing these mini comps every week.

Also remember that these comps are for fun and but also are for learning and practice during a competition environment. Not to show who's the better pilot. :):)

***Been there myself...
5 years ago at the one of the last SSI Freefly comps in Maine. My team and another team were 5th and 6th out of 6 teams. Final round of the comp we decided to fuck off and do a 6-way instead of finishing. We already knew we were both dead last. While fun, it showed a pretty good lack of respect for the comp and to the other teams.

Maybe not quite the same situation, but a not-so-good habit to get into. Kick some ass next weekend and redeem yourself! :)

I here a lot of people say that. I asked who was gonna do pond swooping this year. I got "I'm not good enough for competition" and "Im not giving $100 to Clint"

I think if there are people willing to judge and you have some sort of course or goal, Im in. I can judge my improvement myself as I go.

You are never gonna get better if you give up everytime there is someone better than you. I would have competed while you had the chance. You can pull downwinders anytime.;)

I hear those kind of responses too sometimes. Funny thing is, it isn't about winning...it's about learning and those comps create a spectacular environment to do so.

I agree with you...downwinders can be pulled anytime. Competing is learning.

It should be noted that before the first round, someone got me to agree to do this if I posted a goose egg in the first round. I had agreed because I really didn't think I was going to zero the first round. As a matter of fact I had specifically chosen a conservative aproach that I thought would guarantee me some score. Had I not missed my dive loop, I would have put up some sort of score.

Next time I'll go through all the rounds. I agree that these things are about learning, that was why I put up the ten bucks in the first place.

Hey, we got a good laugh out of the crowd...and Shani, I only proved that I very occassionaly rarely sometimes choke under pressure, hardly ever. I will just have to focus a little on my swoop accuracy for next Sunday's comp so I can redeem myself.

Was only making a bit of light humor (at your expense).
Something I do, very occasionaly, rarely sometimes, hardly ever. :P:)
You're a really good pilot. You'll redeem yourself. May I suggest bigger dive loops? :D Or maybe 'safety orange'? :P

You gave up.

This reminds me of a conversation with our very own SkyMonkeeOne the other weekend.
We were discussing the best approach to make the first gate.
Skymonkeeone reminded us that - by the end of the season - the guy collects the most points and earns the title is not always the guy who posted the most spectacular runs, rather, it was the guy who consistently flew through the first gate.
You don't have to win every meet to win the title.
In many sports, it is the guy who consistently takes second place who wins the cup.

As long as you don't endanger anyone else or break a FAR, you are entitled to do what you like on a solo skydive that you pay for.

If someone else had sponsored you or you'd been a team member, that's a different matter.
...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
