piisfish 140 #26 December 18, 2004 QuoteThe flat clear piece of landing area at the bottom of the slope is about 100' long ... ive thought of starting half way up first to try and access the glide angle etc.. Do you think that would be a good idea?? from my paraglider experience, better to start from flat just to inflate the canopy, then go up a couple of meters etc etc... step by step. if you are around 30ft high when you reach the flat part, you might get in trouble. And don't frget to check the wind. If you have facing wind, you might get the turbulence from the trees...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
andyflylife 0 #27 December 18, 2004 Thanks for the advice. i'm intending to fly directly into steady wind if possible. Hopefully the trees shouldnt cause to much of a problem as there only 10-12 ft max. Ive just got to wait for good conditions now, and so the park isnt to full of people as i dont want lots of spectators on my first launch!! Blue skies "swooper 24/7, 365!" frenchyflyer 0 #28 December 22, 2004 Quotei'm intending to fly directly into steady wind if possible. That's the idea: you want to be facing the wind when going down the slope and you want steady wind (i.e. not turbulent)! Quote Hopefully the trees shouldnt cause to much of a problem as there only 10-12 ft max. It might depend on the strength of the wind, but then if they are too strong you don't even want to try flying your canopy, right? OK, I just had a look at the second picture and I was getting a wrong idea when looking at the first one. The previous piece of advice is a good one too: start quite low then work your way up. If you are afraid to overshoot, land crosswind perpendicular to the slope (but not downwind towards the ground! it sounds obvious but, well, I don't know you ). Have fun and be safe, let us know how it all went...
andyflylife 0 #29 January 1, 2005 Well i made my first few attempts! I'd been waiting for nice steady winds 5-10mph, but i ended up with absolutely no wind at all! I thought it would be ok though so gave it a try. I got the canopy flying with front risers initially whilst setting off running down the slope, but whatever i tried i couldn't get the lift to launch with either rears or brakes! It felt so close to launching but didn't quite do it!! Do you think the wing loading/ lack of wind was the main problem?? Remember my canopy is loaded at only 0.9. I only made 3 attempts as it was going dark but each try was more controlled and i got a feeling for launching! ..... Luvin' it! "swooper 24/7, 365!"
