towerrat 0 #1 February 21, 2005 I've seen in several other threads mention of barrel rolls. Call me stupid, but I can't seem to figure out how one would go about actually performing said maneuver Would someone care to enlighten me?Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! freedom1 0 #2 February 21, 2005 I have seen video of this manuever on skydivingmovies.com. Just type in barrell roll and watch the vid. its pretty sweet. The barrel rolls are called "Low altitude barrel rolls under canopy by Will Packard"

bob.dino 1 #4 February 21, 2005 It's described in Brian Germain's The Parachute And Its Pilot. Since I don't have my copy in front of me and I've never attempted one, I'll refrain from posting a most-likely-incorrect explanation.

He also mentioned that it could be a pretty risky move if enough speed isn't built up. Since we're on the topic, if someone could elaborate, please do. I've been curious about trying this (at altitude, of course). JeffShhh... you hear that sound? That's the sound of nobody caring!

Samurai136 0 #9 February 22, 2005 If you do the barrel-roll improperly the roll will stall and you will rapidly find yourself in linetwists and/or falling into your canopy. Be careful.Ken"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
towerrat 0 #10 February 25, 2005 I've actually lost some weight and am no longer loaded enough to even make an attempt. It's not necessarily my thing anyways, just curious. ThanksPlay stupid games, win stupid prizes!

frost 1 #12 March 20, 2009 Is it just me or does it look at 39-40 sec like the canopy is showing the same signs of "dropping" as the original guy who busted himself up? http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=168&string=barrel%20roll
adamT 0 #13 March 20, 2009 It certainly isn't in a high energy state after that maneuver. I think its kind of cool though, that you worked on it enough to be able to bring it that low. Not something i think ill ever add to my skill set, but cool none the less.

rhanold 0 #15 March 21, 2009 Thank you for acknowledging the work and planning it took to get that video. I have done that maneuver multiple times on more than 300 jumps before doing it below 2000 feet. I mounted 2 other altimeters on my rig so I could try to get a better understanding of the altitude loss and flight path. Then there was the process of bringing it down to under 100 feet. On a side note I stopped doing the maneuver below 2000 ft again until I can finish it with more energy more consistently. ~Ryan
