worlds longest swoop from a plane across flat ground?

Recommended Posts

does anyone have information on the official and/or unofficial distance and/or speed of the longest/fastest swoops done to date?

This information is needed for an article on ground launching/swooping in the yet to be published EXTREME magazine here in New Zealand.

I want to make sure the correct information is published.

thanks,

Rhys

John Judy - clocked with a radar gun at 94mph horizontal speed in Colorado.

Jay Mo - 678 feet (exact measurement is here somewhere) Colorado.

That was the baddest superman over solid uneven ground that has ever been accomplished. You saw how far I was laid out didn't you? I was beginning to worry that my nipples would be raw, but my scrotum took most of the brunt of the ground before they got rubbed. I'm going to go and buy a cup this weekend.

Anybody know if they clocked Luigi when he was landing the 46 or the 39? Or anybody else at a super-high wingloading? They might be the fastest.

I would be in the ranking under a 66 VX. (210 with out gear)
No, I do not jump it regularly! It was sent in for a test jump and no one else would jump it FCOL.

So if you are in the ranking then what kind of numbers are we talking about here? I didn't know that John Judy set a record. I do know that he frequently trains with around 40lbs or more of weight under a Velo 96/103 with 300lbs HMAs on it. 90+ mph is pretty damn fast!

I don't believe a speed record was awarded. In fact was it even John? I seem to remember something about Scott Roberts coming in real fast. Of course I could be mistaken, maybe it was John? John, Scott, Jay, Shimell ... shit they all came in ultra fast.

When it came to the cpc championship Mark Shimell and I had the fastest two speeds for the course in round 2. If we would not have busted the first round I think we would have been contenders.

Mark Shimell
JVX whatever
Rnd 1 10.00
Rnd 2 2.33

Grant Adams
Velo 103
RND 1 10.00
Rnd 2 2.50

This info can be found here: http://www.canopypiloting.com/cpcstandardscores.htm

True luigi had a really fast swoop when I saw him land the 39, but it wasn't really far. It shut down at a rather hi airspeed forcing him to slide in on his feet. It was impressive.

I like to put a lot of power behind my turns. I really don't know exactly how I do it, but I come out with some good power. Sometimes I can get a grip of power, other times I just get lazy. My goal this year is 500' distance without weights on my 103. I went 407 in the comp, but I didn't use the pop up technique that a lot of you guys were doing. I should be getting my canopy back from Mel next week with the technora line set. I'm really looking forward to trying it out. I remember that speed run when I went flying past you, and we were really far out of the course. I just remember thinking the straw that they put out for people to land on was worthless as it was about 150-200 feet behind us. My ass was sore ass hell that evening from the fast conditions that day. It was fun though, but I sure was ready for a cold beer by the time it was over.

Distance is your strength with speed being a close second. But if you don't mind a little constructive criticism, you need to work on setting down in a positive scoring zone on your zone accuracy runs. You clearly were one of Colorado's best distance guys and there's no question that you know how to generate some good speed, But I think zone accuracy is what hurt you last year both in some regional meets as well as the CPC Championships.

But I can't talk too much shit right now as I've made a grand total of 13 swoops since I left Colorado in October and don't seem to be at the level I was at in September. I got two more jumps in on the JVX today but I had to abort my swoop on my first jump due to traffic (I still got a decent swoop in for a harness turn without touching my front risers) and the 2nd jump was into a strong'ish wind. It was a decent swoop, but not what I was used to doing last season. But dang this JVX sure seems to maintain it's speed better than a stock Velo and I still have that huge anchor called a PC+dbag which I hope to replace with an RDS system sometime in the not too distant future. Nah I take that back. The JVX is a horrible canopy. Nobody else should buy it. Production should stop so that no new pilots can be on them anymore. :)

After watching the video of all you guys ( and girls) i decided to get THESE to help with those landings.;) I will let you all know how well they work.

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
