kurtvert 0 #1 August 21, 2006 Let's say i'm landing at Lost Prairie (3500ft MSL) downwind and don't want to break my leg (again) in a gopher hole. Does anyone have any tips on slowing down a swoop machine before i have to put my feet down on un-even ground?
SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 August 21, 2006 Yes. Regardless of which direction you are landing, you must still completely flare the canopy. When I rip intentional downwinders, I generally have my "landing gear" farther out in front of me, toes up and ready to slide. The key, still, is completing your flare once your feet are down and you are sliding. Chuck

And just when the lift of the canopy is almost gone, give it an extra flare at the end to lift your body up so that you can stand on straight legs. This will pitch the canopy as much upwards as possible and will direct that last forward motion slighly upwards instead of just forwards. Correctly executed it will look like you are pushing yourself from the ground with your legs while it is actually your canopy that is lifting you. rgds, Stefan
