northcave 0 #1 June 19, 2007 Imagine you'r 10 stone (65kg). Strap a big 270 canopy on your rig. Climb a nice big steep mountain like here: http://timgood.net/photos/Holidays%20&%20Travel/Spain%20Aug%202005/Summit.JPG With no wind, would you ground launch off the top and have a nice free ride to the bottom? ---------------------------- p.s. please don't reply,,, "why not just buy a paraglider". The question is would you do it with a skydiving rig and big main. Oh and that pic is in spain.
Guinness_fr 0 #2 June 19, 2007 There's no way I would ride down with a 270 over my head, that would be way too boring However you must know that groundlaunching is definitely not as easy as you make it sound!!! There's lots of stuff to know and to verify before you actually start launching, and doing your first launch from the top of a rocky moutain is a big no-no in my opinion. Please find someone in your area with a good experience in groundlaunching and take advice from him/her or you might get seriously hurt.
northcave 0 #3 June 19, 2007 fair points and yeah i wouldn't try it without experience i just wondered if other would... when you say 270 too boring.,,, surly a smaller more radical canopy wouldn't get you distance to get you off the mountain in the picture... wouldn;t you come down too early? Once again just asking your opinion rather than suggesting i do it.
hjumper33 0 #4 June 19, 2007 Its not all about distance. If you want to just fly up in the air around mountains, get a paraglider.

CanuckInUSA 0 #7 June 20, 2007 No wind with a 270 and those jagged rocks? What's your wingloading on the 270? Probably way to light for no wind. But if do do it, do two things. Get some good health insurance and make sure you get video. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
yoink 321 #8 June 20, 2007 With a wingloading of 0.51 on a nil wind day you might be pushing it! Especially running over that type of ground to get airborne! As others have said, it looks like a beautiful flight, but it's a high tariff one. Looks like lots of rocks and I'd guess not too many outs. I bet it'd be a great area for paragliding if you could find a launch site though! Whereabouts in Spain is it? I'm toying with the idea of a European GL trip next year. riggerrob 643 #10 June 20, 2007 Last time I launched from terrain like that, I had to tape my ankle to stop the leak!

I'm toying with the idea of a European GL trip next year. Its in the mountains above Nerja, spain. About 80km East of Malaga. I do a lot of walking/climbing around there and though i might be able to take my rig up and get a free ride down. Maybe not a good idea after the comments above. How about a lot of wind, an 84, and some hiking boots with really-fucking-good ankle support. :)
cepalm1 0 #14 June 21, 2007 high wind creates turbulance. i would prefer nil to no wind and my 12m gin nano (a little easier to launch in a place like that)Whats the worst that could happen?

Ade 0 #17 June 21, 2007 270 and no wind! unless it is vertical, you would not get off the ground.I see you are from the UK have a look at our web site http://www.speedfly.co.uk/ there are plenty of flyable sites in the UK.Get in touch if you want some info. VivaHeadDown 0 #18 June 22, 2007 There is a lot that the picture doesn't tell. What does the Landing Zone look like? Are there any obstacles along the way? What type of outs are there? And then the angle of the Launch Area is difficult to tell. Without experience, I'd say no. With experience (and somone to assist with launch given all the snags and no winds) and further understanding of the site, it might be possible.
