GL glides near sea level

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for typical observed glide ratios on ground launches near (below 2000' MSL) sea level. Preferably with 9-cell, non GL-specific, non X-braced canopies. If you provide data please specify X-braced or non X-braced, and the approx wind speed at launch site. Also if the temperature was way low or high, that'd be good to include. Thanks,

There are obviously a lot of factors involved, wouldnt the manufacturer be the best bet? Or if you have experience with GL, do some experimenting to find out. of course warmer air is going to give you a steeper glide as is lower barometric pressure and higher altitudes will as well obviously. I doubt that calculations will get you much further than a general idea anyway.

Not to thread jack but can you use a typical skydiving canopy for GL?

You can use any canopy that you can get airborne, it's done with skydiving canopies all the time.

Specifically information on glide and speed for Sabre-1 120, 135 and 150 canopies loaded around 1.2 to 1.6 would be helpful to Tony and me. We have other canopy options but are looking at launching a difficult hill with those canopies. Yes we plan on gathering our own data but it would be useful to hear about other people's measured glide and forward speed. I'm not interested in discussion about flight theory or calculations, only experimental data.

Nope glide ratio would be the same, glide speed would be higher.
