Gear Bags

Recommended Posts

I actually use a motorcycle T-bag that fits everything but the helmet perfectly. It goes on the bike, in the trunk, or under the airplane seat with no problems. It's strong, and it has a huge top zipper and some outside pockets.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I got mine from Sunshine Factory. Also Terry Pike at AeroTech product makes a great gear bag. The smaller part on the front doubles as a backpack. You can zip it off and wear it around...pretty cool. I have also seen quite a few people with those weelie luggage things to make it easier to carry around. The hard case versions can be a good idea as well.

Either a duffle bag from Army Navy Surplus (durable, cheaper than the fancy shmancy gear bags) or (what I have) a hardside suitcase that I use as a gear bag. I can beat it up, spill stuff on it, etc and it will still protect my stuff. Also, it locks up, too. Sure, someone can pick the lock, but if the gear bag is bike locked (still have to get one of those...)to something else, someone trying to undo that, pick the suitcase lock, etc will get noticed.

Why spend 80+ pounds on a rig bag that'll only hold a rig?

Am I the only person who thinks that buying skydiving related items from a skydiving related company is a good thing to do?

Personally, I've always carried my rig in a bag that was built specifically for that purpose. All my stuff fits in there just fine - after all, the bag was designed to carry it. Depending on the manufacturer, most gear bags are built tough to handle carrying the load - most WalMart or equivalent bags aren't going to last nearly as long because the people making them don't use the strongest stitching or materials.

And then there's the fact that by buying something designed and built by skydivers for skydivers, I'm helping to support my sport instead of helping to support some rich executives who've never even considered jumping, or some poor person in some third world country...

I agree, but, which one you recommend?, I'd like to have your opinion

I got a nice bag from Wal-Mart for about $25, its got wheels and everything, holds my rig and ALL of my gear. It even matches my gear colors. I don't care that it wasn't made by skydivers, I'm a broke-ass college student, as much as I would like to support a skydiver owned company, I can't pay their prices and I got a better bag for it.

Looking at most bags designed and sold by skydiving companies, I have found that most lack any kind of ergonomic comforts. Sure you can fit a bunch of stuff in there, but they suck to actually try to carry. The Square One bags seem to be especially guilty. Air Force store sells a great bag that will hold a rig (unpacked), couple of suits, and has a zip off day bag for about $70. It's even comfortable when you are wearing it. I personally use a rolling duffle.

Been a SCUBA diver for most part of my life, I have plenty of SCUBA gear bags so thats what I use, they can carry a load of things and are weigth resistance. There is one catch almost all scuba bags have small holes to let the water exit.

Mmmm....good ideas, but do they fit in the luggage compartment of an airplane? I HATE picking up baggage at the airport, I like to fly, get my stuff and get off. :)

I've had the same gear bag since I graduated student status.... the thing fits perfectly in an overhead (short side showing, too, takes up NO room). THe best part now, is that before it only held a rig and maybe a tee shirt. I can get both my rigs in it now;). Terry Pike at Aerotech makes a nice gear bag, and you can get different sizes, and custom if you so desire. Look for his ads in Skydiving mag. (I've got his number at home, PM me if you want it, but I think he has a web site also)

eg from eg sky systems absolutely rules for gear bags. they are excellent construction, not expensive and he is great to work with on customs.

we just bought a dozen gear bags from him with <><> on them for all our demo's.

if you never heard of him, you probably already have some of his work: he is the manufacturer of the leather hacky handles used by most rig manufactures, and the classic leather frap hats.
