Zlew 0 #27 March 12, 2015 What did you think of the openings compared to a velo?
danielcroft 2 #28 March 12, 2015 The VK openings are slower and easier to deal with IMO. At least for the (not quite apples to apples) comparison between my VC84 and the VK79. The opening at 12 seconds (https://vimeo.com/122026246#t=12) is the helmet cam view followed by the foot cam view which shows the way the openings work. It's pretty amazing how chilled they are given how responsive the wing is when open. I think the way the outer two cells are half closed and (I suppose) not heavily cross-ported slows down their inflation and thus the opening and tendencies for the wing to go harshly off heading. I jump my VC84 with the RDS slider which is the same size (interestingly) as the VK RDS slider. PD doesn't recommend this as the RDS slider is smaller than the draw string and hence will likely give faster openings. Personally, I like the faster openings. Put it this way, in 17 jumps, I feel less need to pay such close attention to my openings on the VK than 250+ on my VC84.
Zlew 0 #29 March 12, 2015 Thanks for the info. I really like the way my VE opens, and when I heard the VK opens even better... I was sold. As I remember, all of the non RDS VE sliders are the same size. Seems odd that canopies could be 40% bigger and have the same size slider.

I'm just going to assume #BodyPosition... I have a little over 40 jumps on a VK 96. Years ago I changed the way I deploy my Velocities. I never look up or reach up during the opening. I square my shoulders to the horizon - while scanning the arc of death with my head and eyes (requires discipline to keep from affecting my body position). During the getting-stood-up-to-vertical process I bring my feet and knees together focusing on the loading of my leg straps and bring my hands in and grab the main lift web at the ring covers. All the while being ready to do a collision avoidance turn by quickly grabbing my rears (only if needed). On all of my VK openings - so far - I've had zero off heading openings. I love that canopy.Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

danielcroft 2 #39 March 23, 2015 Did 3 jumps on the VK75 in less than ideal conditions. The openings were nice, it flew similarly to the VK79 (shocking, I know). We had some very turbulent weather that was intermittent. It'd die off for a good while and then come back with a vengeance - seemed like it was thermic but the cycles were really long. Anyway, I felt happier under the VK79. Videos are being uploaded to my vimeo... https://vimeo.com/album/3291688
