hackey VS toggle

Recommended Posts

When you say "toggle" do you mean a Pud (Pull-out) or a Freefly handle?

If you mean a Pud, that's been discussed many times. If you mean a Freefly handle, well that hasn't been discussed quite as much.

I have a Freefly handle on my Wings, it is the most secure BOC handle that I've ever seen. Infact, I can hold one shoulder of my rig and pick the bottom up by the handle and it won't pop-out; however, it is still easy to deploy without it getting stuck.

I've had my rig up to 270mph in a headdown and never had to worry about my handle coming out on me.

nah when i say toggle i mean like the 2" piece of hollow plastic piping that comes as standard on most pilot chutes. Whats a "freefly" handle?

People get their fingers caught in those and they look ugly...You could do what a friend did, have her rigger cut of the piece of plastic and sew on a dolls head. Gives her PC a very very scary look. :P

FF handle. Its a new item (new in the past couple years) offered by most gear manufactures, its a BOC that basically has a PUD type handle, that is secured under the corner of the right hand flap (on the bottom of the container). This keeps the handle very much in place and protects the opening of the BOC.

Not the best pic of it, but its the best thing I could find real quick.

Its all about looks and price, the pipe (note its not 2" pipe, you can't get your hand around a 2 " pipe)
looks okay, but kinda ugly, the hackey (little leather ball) can be custom matched to your spiffy rig, but will cost ya bucks, zlottys, or quids. I guess you could put your finger thru the pipe, with ensuing dramatic consequences, but you'd have to be pretty dumb to do that....

A freefly handle is a shaped pad, very similar to a cutaway pad, which has a tongue, and is secured in a pocket adjacent to the BOC pouch, they are quite secure, and less likley to get caught/dragged out, etc.
As my old pal Aggs intimates some freefly handles are more secure than others.
A PUD (pullout) is a similar pad, but the pilot chute etc are located inside the rig, you used to need a D licence to jump them in the UK....Dunno about the regs now though... If you don't know what a pullout system is, don't order it on your rig.

What if you have it in the shape of a BOOBIE? :)

for the plastic tube (toggle), you can stick a few corks from wine bottles inside of it (one on each side, you'll probably have to cut them down) to keep your finger from getting stuck inside. I know we don't have money to upgrade our gear, but as skydivers, we always should be able to afford a little booze.

Sounds effective. I really like a pullout, but have always disliked the pud and favored the hackey. I built and jumped a hackey pullout for a while until it was cut off in a wrap. I've never liked the plastic handle, so of course that's what I'm currently using.
