4-way block from 1988?

Recommended Posts

Wow!

I'm watching a U.S. Nationals tape from 1988 that I found this weekend and boy am I entertained!

The first round of 4-way was out of a Cessna-182! The second round is out of an Otter.

Some of the teams get 3 re-jumps on a round!

But the most entertaining so far (just 1/2 way through the 2nd round of 4-way so far) is a formation that I've NEVER even heard of before!

Any old-timers out there from 1988? ;)

It's a block that starts with the inside and outside center's legs locked together and the tail and point in grips to make 'stars' from the IC and OC's hands.

The hand grips are dropped and the pieces turn 180's (legs still locked) and the tail and point are re-gripped by the IC and OC in two cats!

What the heck? Anyone know the name of this block? And if any other 'leg-grip' randoms or blocks have ever been in our dive pool?

Although the teams are only numbered (no names posted by Norman Kent, who made this video), one can definitely pick out the Golden Knights and I believe...AirMoves! B|

Cool video so far!

I don't remember the name but formations with "leg-locks" were only around for a couple of years and then dropped.

Dang....(same video), the 8-way is out of a DC3 with the videoflyer exiting LAST...following the team out the door!

Can't wait to see 16-way (or is that a more recent development?).

Bet 10-way is done the 'old fashioned' way (the better way, IMHO).

Ah...DC3's, where your jumpsuit is NEVER clean. ;)

Not sure, but I have have had a similar sounding block described to me. It was called a "Venezuelan Connection."

Ding, Ding...We have a winner...Unfortunately you didn't phrase it as a question, so we are gonna have to make you buy beer.

;)

The GK's used to be able to launch that fucker..amazing.

Booties kinda killed those blocks.

Yes! That's the one I'm talking about!

Finished watching that round with a sense of wonder. Only 2 teams (out of 15) turned the center piece 180. So....I guess the other 13 teams busted that block!

It's crazy how they tried to connect those leg locks, though. Only the GK's seem to have it going for them.

Glad they took it out of the dive pool. Cann you imagine trying to fly that sucker in the wind tunnel?! :P

I'd have to contact Norman Kent first. Ya know, copyrights and all.

I'll have to get back with you later. Norm, as you know, is currently pretty busy in Thailand right now. :)

I'd love to get copies of old nationals competitions. Has anyone contacted USPA about this? I'm particularly interested in 1978-79. Ground-based video.

Hopefully the museum will correct a problem that has been around for quite some time. It's almost impossible to find anything about the history of sport via the USPA web site. You'd think that maybe you'd be able to find out all the participants, medal winners and scores, but sadly they don't even do that. Look at any other sport web site, baseball for instance, they have stats going back to Abner.

Thats due to the fact that the USPA is a giant waste.

They don't do much of anything.

Before people start AOPA did more to get us back in the air after 9/11, and AOPA does more about airport issues than the USPA ever did, or ever will.

the interlock in action. (see attached photo)

Yep, that's how the GK's did the first 1/2 of the block. Another team took a completely novel approach and flew the IC/OC piece at an almost side-by-side configuration (legs still locked together, too!).

After seeing how nicely the GK's block flowed, the other way looked rather goofy! :P

I don't think he went to Thailand, I'm pretty sure I saw him this past weekend

My bad. You're right.

What's he doing in FL?

Hi Mike,

The *.jpg files for the 4 and 8-way dive pools of 1988 were too big to post here, so I sent them to your e-mail box (the one in your profile).

There are 2 *.jpg files contained in the *.zip file I sent to you.

Laurie, Dave at SQ1 has a copy of "The Airmoves Story" It has B.C. and them doing that formation more then a few times. It was shot after 1988 but you can see them doing it in there.

I have that video as well. I'll have to look at it again as I don't remember seeing this particular block there.

Thanks for the tip. :^)
