TitaniumLegs 8 #1 January 31, 2003 I was going to mention this in the HMA/Vectran thread, but I think it's important enough to have it's own headline. It amazes me to see how casual people are about walking on lines. Even some riggers and packers! Go ask on a climbing forum if it's OK to step on a rope, but make sure you put on your flame-proof skivvies first. We should be just as anal, because we are just as dependent on our "ropes", and the damage can be just as bad. There are three problems this causes: 1. Direct abrasion between your shoe and the ground. 2. Dirt either from your shoe or the environment getting pushed into the line. (This can happen on its own, but why help it along?) As the lines flex and are loaded and unloaded, they dirt cuts on the fibres. 3. Abrasion of internal fibres as your weight works the dirt against the fibres. Just because you can't see the damage does not mean it isn't there. There is a fourth risk in that the owner of the lines you just walked on might get violent in your general direction, or at least call you mean names and refuse to share his beer with you. fool 0 #2 January 31, 2003 I've seen and thought the same thing S.E.X. party #1 "Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "f*#k, what a ride".

As for mean names, I have a very special section in my lexicon for people who step on my lines.....I will save the faint hearted reader blushes by not detailing these words here..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. kmcguffee 0 #4 January 31, 2003 Good point. At my old DZ "not stepping on lines" was a golden rule. My 4 and 6 year old boys even follow the rule at the house and at the DZ. While learning mountaineering in the Army the punishment for stepping on climbing ropes was severe. "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do." relyon 0 #5 January 31, 2003 I've not really seen casual disregard for lines described. I have seen people step on lines accidentally. What I hate is when I'm crossing a packing area tiptoeing very carefully so as not to touch anything and someone literally yells "Don't walk on the lines!!!" I'm not. Chill. Ironically, wear from walking on lines is a moot point for me as I tend to replace linesets every 250 jumps anyway. Bob
Topcat 0 #6 January 31, 2003 Anecdote: Wuffo was walking across the packing area. Not only does he snag some lines, he catches some lines on his feet and literally yanks the dbag out of a skydiver's hands. Needless to say, she had to start all over. He just SMIRKS, and says 'Glad I'm not jumping that one!' Personally, I think that is legitimate grounds for murder. -Sandy

Yes, someone stepping on my lines while I'm packing is a "pet-peve" of mine and yes, I agree it isn't the best thing in the world for the lines either as far as wear goes. Weird thing is though I'm fairly tolerant of it if its another skydiver, especially if its one of my buds, and its plainly an accident... heck, how many of us have done it... snagged someone's lines by mistake. However, something I'm not particularly proud of... ... on the other hand if its a whuffo or worse yet... the kids or dog of some poor whuffo, I've been known to blow them some serious sh*t over stepping on lines. rhino 0 #11 February 4, 2003 God that pisses me off!!! I yell at people that either walk or let their children walk on my lines. Which leads to the Drop Zone proper supervision of children speech... Damn I feel your pain.. Rhino
