AMax 0 #1 October 17, 2005 A question to those who know how to do it well: What would be the best way to start - arms wide/out or arms in mantis position? I just started to learn how to knee fly. The first attempts with arms in mantis did not seem too bad, but I had some problems with controlling heading. So maybe flying with arms out would be easier for beginning? rehmwa 2 #2 October 18, 2005 I like my arms out front like mantis and did that right away. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
Reginald 0 #3 October 18, 2005 Anton, In the tunnel I was taught to start with arms to my side for stability. The objective was to start brining them into a mantis as my stability increased."We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things." CP
vibeke 0 #4 October 18, 2005 ARms in front, like mantis, but further from your body and perhaps a bit wider. I use my arms to scoop the air and press my upper body up, when I do it. When kneeflying you generally will be slightly more bent forward, than in a sit where you have your torso in straight vertical, and you wil need your arms in front of you for balance. Key element is the way you shape your bootie really, for maximum lift. Bend your feet outwards to get full surface from bootie to work with._________________________________________________________ Your success and happiness, is in direct proportions to your commitment to excellence, regardless of your chosen field of endeavour. Reginald 0 #6 October 18, 2005 Anton, maybe you should try and get stable on your belly first. "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things." CP
AMax 0 #7 October 18, 2005 That's exactly what my teammates told me to master before they consider jumping with me again. Please don't tell them that I was playing with knee flying instead of learning how to get stable on my belly.

Head-up flying is incredibly versatile. With your knees below you, for example, you can fly with a either a vertical (fast) or angled (slow) torso, depending on the nature of the dive. See my post on another thread for more info on the differences.
