4-way camp vs. 2-on-2 camp

Recommended Posts

I've heard great things about both of those camps, I think Billvon has been to one of the 2 on 2 camps maybe you could drop him a PM and get a first hand account of it. I just looked at their schedule though and it looks like their 2 on 2 is booked up.

I've done one of their basic skills camp, a 4 way tunnel camp with my IC and a friend of ours, a 2 on 2, and a couple of 3 on 1 camps and I have loved every one of them. I'd have to say that the most productive ones were the 3 on 1 camps, just because I was the only student in the group. Having three coaches doin 4 way with you ensures that you are getting to see how evrything is supposed to be done in a perfect world. It also pushes you more when you are the one setting the pace, you're only as fast as your slowest flyer and when that's you it sort of forces you to move outside your comfort zone.

Hope his helps.

They said that they're going to have more throughout the winter, but I just looked at the four-way camp and noticed that is nearly full (and I can't go to the one in April....I better get a move on things!)

What are your goals? personal skills or bringing up a team

Are you joining a camp by yourself or bringing a full team or 1 other, etc......?

personal skills or bringing up a team

Both! :D

One member of my team is doing the four-way camp. We're still short a teammate (and my thought is that maybe someone that we find would want to do the 2-on-2 with me.)

The reasons I'm leaning toward the two-on-two camp are that it's less time off work and more tunnel time.

If you have a team, but are new, the 2 on 2 format is a fantastic way to learn the blocks, and to fly with each other, etc. I like the camp structured as follows:

a - 1 on 1 basic skills for each person. As much as needed. Without the basics in place, it's hard to move on. This might be just a couple 2 minute sessions each or the entire camp, depends on where everybody is in terms of mantis skills. Even with hours and hours of tunnel time, I still learn something eye opening from the pros during these sessions.

b - lots of shared time. rotate the instructors through 2 on 2 with each pair of of teammates in their slots. Put the whole 4 way team together in the same drills. This is where you really wear each other out as each teammate and each coach will run 2 of every 3 turns.

c - finish all 4 way, all the time with a coach watching and giving feedback and sometimes stepping in for one teammate - very useful for vertical blocks.....

d - randomly mix in bootie flying and 2 way drills (sidebuds, tag, etc) to de-stress and have some fun.

If you are a practiced team, then I'd still do the 1 on 1 stuff for personal improvement and then move to fully coached 4 way drills.

I'd not worry about which camp so much as making sure the coaches know what you are doing both as individuals and as a 4-way. They can design the camp.

If you are without teammates and solely focused on personal skills, the 1 on 1 followed by 3 on 1 (if you can afford it) sounds fantastic.....

the 3 on 1 does get a bit pricy but it's worth every penny if you really have high aspirations in the sport

You said you guys have 3 out of 4 people on the team, if everyone is able to maybe you could think about scheduling an AS coach to fly as the fourth member of the team, basically you'd be doing a camp with a player coach team. My IC and I did that last year, we only had two of us but found a friend down in Eloy who was more than happy to step in and fill the third slot.

www.tunnelcamp.com This lists all of their one on one camps, and I think www.airspeed.org is where you are going to find all of the 4 way camps, the 2 on 2 is on the first website I believe as well. Most of the stuff I have done with them though was scheduled directly with them. I think Todd is still doing their scheduling you can check on the AS website, drop him an email and tell him what you have in mind and he could probably either suggest a camp or maybe help you set something up. Everytime I have worked with them they have bent over backwards to take care of me, Kirk, Andy H., and Thomas stayed late into the night at the tunnel with me one time to flyafter a long day of 16 training jumps, and looking at Kirk during their debrief he seemed exhausted, but still showed up at the tunnel ready to put no less than %100 effort into my coaching. Andy D., Brian, and Andy H. again did the same after a long day of running a camp. I can't say enough positive things about how great they are to work with;)

good luck, and keep us posted on what you end up booking, I'm curious.
