sdctlc 0 #1 February 11, 2003 There was a discussion about TSO'ed and non-TSO'ed gear at the DZ the other weekend. Crappy weather makes for these conversations. The questions that came up were who could legaly pack a rig for jumping in the US if it was non-TSO'ed and then who can jump the Non-TSO'ed gear. This question was based on a jumper that is from a South Africa country and has Non-TSOed gear while traveling in the states. Additionally it went to if anybody could jump it and if a US rigger could legally pack it if they had the manuals. Thanks, Scott C. After looking at the post I want to make sure it was clear: I am talking about the reserve for packing issues regarding a rigger and the reserve and container as a whole for a US jumper i.e. borowing the gear, if it's non-tso'ed."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!" skygod7777 0 #2 February 11, 2003 i do believe that any rigger can pack it. but then only the jumper from the visiting country can jump the rig. i think, maybe someone will go look this up, but i don't have time to later
Professor 0 #3 February 11, 2003 Everybody loves the SIM: Sec. 105.49 Foreign parachutists and equipment (a) No person may conduct a parachute operation, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from that aircraft with an unapproved foreign parachute system unless- (1) The parachute system is worn by a foreign parachutist who is the owner of that system. (2) The parachute system is of a single-harness dual parachute type. (3) The parachute system meets the civil aviation authority requirements of the foreign parachutist's country. (4) All foreign non-approved parachutes deployed by a foreign parachutist during a parachute operation conducted under this section shall be packed as follows- (i) The main parachute must be packed by the foreign parachutist making the next parachute jump with that parachute, a certificated parachute rigger, or any other person acceptable to the Administrator. (ii) The reserve parachute must be packed in accordance with the foreign parachutist's civil aviation authority requirements, by a certificated parachute rigger, or any other person acceptable to the Administrator. riggerrob 643 #5 February 12, 2003 If you stick with the letter of the law, FAA licensed riggers can only repack FAA TSOed parachutes. Otherwise you need a rigger with a more "flexible" rating, say a CSPA rigger. CSPA riggers can repack any reserve that is "approved" in its country of origin. sdctlc 0 #6 February 12, 2003 Rigger Rob, That is a funny sigI thought it was interpreted the way that you read it but others were thinking by the letter of the SIM a looser explanation was there. Still an air of confusion out there on this issue I guess! Looks like the nts and bolts is agreed that depending on how you read it a US rigger can pack it but only if he is doing it so that the foreign jumper can jump it. Thanks, Scott C. Scott C. Professor 0 #7 February 12, 2003 Quote So what if I have a residence in the UK.. but my citizenship is US. Can I jump my UK rig in the US? I know this is a joke, but still, I wouldn't think so, since you're not 'foreign', whatever that means. On the other hand, if you were a UK citizen, w/ a residence in the US, you could jump it. QuoteIf you stick with the letter of the law, FAA licensed riggers can only repack FAA TSOed parachutes. Do you know if this is specifically stated somewhere? It doesn't seem to say that, but I have nocited recently that different parts of the FARs addressing similar things seem to contradict each other. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl.
