WLDMAN 0 #1 June 20, 2007 Hi all, I was on a team that competed in the NPSL meet this last weekend at Skydive Twincities. After the meet and scores were posted, I saw the "handicap" also posted. I don't see anything posted (or can't find anything) on the NSL website explaining this or even referring to it. Can anyone tell me: What's the significance of this number and how is it computed? rehmwa 2 #2 June 20, 2007 Hi Marcus - If you have any specifics, I can explain it to you in detail. I ran the numbers for our league and have done it since the handicap was implemented. Essentially, it's a mitigated (by expanding the numerator and denominator with a constant adder) ratio of the team's handicap to the best team's handicap. The mulitplier is applied to the following meet's score. Our first season, the lowest scoring team won the region due to a worse version of the handicap process. It levels the playing field - the calculation is intended to not favor low average teams unfairly. It's not a bad method. We apply it local in the NPSL for A and Rookie class. (never had it for AAA class, and this year deleted it for AA). I think that if we have 4 comp classes, it's not really needed at all in our region. Nationally, Kurt uses it within every class to determine national prizes like tunnel time giveaway. http://www.skyleague.com/pages/rules/handicap.html The key point, is if you raise your handicap from meet to meet, you can win after handicap as a reward for improving. even if your raw score never exceeds the other teams. Since both meets we've have VERY slow draws, this bodes well for your team in the next two comps. So go practice and take advantage of it. The average is the team's scoring average to date. IF they are in their first meet, then the average is based on rounds 1,2,3. In short - If, for this meet Team A has the highest average (A), then Team B's average (B) is something lower. The handicap is calculated as follows: Hb = (A + A/B)/(B + A/B) for team C? Hc = (A + A/C)/(C + A/C) Team A? Ha = (A + A/A)/(A +A/A) = 1.0 of course and then the handicap is multiplied to your final meet average Since each meet you refine your team average, your handicap will update each comp. Your meet average from Iowa was calculated against 3CD's first three round average from this meet (their first meet). Your next handicap will be based on the average of all 12 rounds of both meets versus the net average of whatever teams shows up..... It worked well in this case, recall there was a 10 point spread between 1st and second, and 2nd and 3rd. After handicap, both spreads were more like 4 each. etc, etc, ad nauseum ... wildfan75 1 #4 June 21, 2007 Marcus!!! It was great competiting against you and the rest of "I Don't Know" and you're right, Solly did a great job! SDTC did a great job hosting (especially manifest--our loads were timed perfectly for us). I don't get the handicap thing and I was a math major for 2 1/2 years. (sure it's a bit arbitrary in structure, but it works) In any case, most of the teams only care about the raw score - as it should be. But, If you train a bit and do really well next time, your improvement might win you some tunnel time (if Skyventure is still doing that with Kurt). That's a great result. ... wildfan75 1 #7 June 21, 2007 I'm sure if I sat down and looked at it I would get it but handicap schmandicap. If it gets us tunnel time, I'm all for it! But in my mind, if we didn't turn the point in time, we shouldn't get credit for it.

Of course having your own suit maker has got to be sweet. Jeni is really excited about gettting booties and hopefully Chromy can put them to work in the tunnel next week. You can pitch to Sandy that A class doesn't need one either. It would sure make scoring meets easier. I should run the numbers for Meet 1 while I'm at it. (results - no change in standing - Had I Don't Know scored 2 more points in the last 3 rounds, they would have tied for 1st after handicap) ...
