Dave The concept is all the same. Main deployment is via a out board handle attached to a steel cable with a straight locking pin. Main canopy is deployed with a spring loaded pilot chute. Miltary rigs use either the FF2 or AR2, a military cypress is undergoing testing. The FF2 works on a barometric pressure. DZ altitude and opening altitude are calculated with the barometric pressure using the Irwin calculator(plastic circles that rotate on each other, hence the term whiz wheel) to get a numerical setting that the jumper dials on the FF2 unit before installing it on the main. The FF2 is a mechanical device that operates under spring tension and pulls the main locking pin at the dialed in altitude, it will fire regardless of your having a canopy out or not. The AR2 is slighty different in design and requires an AR2 calculator(an actual electronic device that does only AR2 calculations. The AR2 can be mounted on either the main or the reserve. Opening altitudes are dialed in by the jumper as well. The AR2 has some issues and is used by some units and not by others. Everything else is pretty much the same except it is very heavy duty, adjustable, and has equipment attachment D or V rings, an O2 pocket for the bottle and either/or an AR2 or FF2 pocket.
