IMGR2 0 #1 June 25, 2002 My question for the forum today is I am looking at doing alot of traveling from here on out and I am trying to figure out how I can edit and deliver videos on the road. Something along the lines of a laptop with DV inputs and RCA outputs for a VCR to put videos on a vhs tape. Adobe Premiere is a very large program, is there something out there that doesn't have as many effects and doesn't need a gig of ram and a 1+ gig processor. Of course I want to put music to them too. Any advice or web links would be appreciated. Bryan
indyz 1 #2 June 25, 2002 My thoughts as somebody who doesn't edit video a whole lot: A modern laptop (I would be eyeing an Apple Powerbook G4) and a firewire camera would probably work pretty well. RCA outs on the laptop aren't really required because you can dump the edited video back down to the camera then use it's RCA output to go to a VCR. PCMCIA card with video output are available, at least for Wintel hardware, if you chose to go that route. An externel Firewire hardrive would be nice to have as well but the Powerbooks only have one Firewire port so you would be stuck swapping back and forth. However, they do come with 60 gig hard drives standard, so you should have quite a bit of room to play. -- Brian

Just one small little nitpick. Some external FireWire drives like the url=http://maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm]Maxtor 3000DV[/url] come with two FireWire ports. You can plug the external drive into the Mac's FireWire port and then plug the camera into the second port of the external FireWire drive. Works like a charm. I should know, that's exactly how I do it!quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
IMGR2 0 #4 June 25, 2002 Quade, You mind posting what the entire system that you use is? Specs? Software? Etc. Or you can e-mail it to me. To make something thats just a couple of minutes long, what's the rendering time like? Bryan
quade 4 #5 June 25, 2002 My current "road" system is; http://www.apple.com/ibook/ Apple iBook http://www.apple.com/imovie/ iMovie http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/ Final Cut Pro http://maxtor.com/products/externalstorage/3000DV/default.htm Maxtor 3000DV For the smaller stuff, I just use the internal drive of the iBook and the very simple iMovie software. For the larger stuff, I hook up the Maxtor and boot up Final Cut Pro. If I were to buy a new notebook, I'd seriously consider the http://www.apple.com/powerbook/ Apple PowerBook because of render times and a few other minor issues - but that's just me.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
