PAL & NTSC miniDV - getting a bit of both

Recommended Posts

Likely an old question - I know I've been missioning on it for a while: how to deal with the PAL-NTSC thing when you travel a lot.

At the moment I'm trying to identify a miniDV model that records in NTSC (as would be suitable for North American useage), and can also play back tapes recorded on a PAL camera. I'm not looking for conversion to NTSC, just playback. It seems to be fairly common for recent PAL models to be able to play NTSC tapes, but not vice versa for some reason.

Anyone got some intimate info on the subject?

thanks,
FBJ

Don't know if this will be what you are looking for, but...

The PC9 will playback PAL on the LCD or on a PAL monitor but nothing else...

I got some video firewired from one of the Aussie's @ the PPPB event in May... He shot it on his PC9E and wired it to my NTSC PC9... It played fine on the camera, and when I plugged in to a PAL monitor, but would not play on a NTSC monitor or capture to computer (even when telling the computer to capture PAL as PAL).

Thanks, that's what I was looking for - seems the PC9 at least does have playback. Any one have other models out there with this feature? I'll make you an offer ;)

u say it would not capture to computer (even when telling the computer to capture PAL as PAL). Was that capturing via digital? Could be it only outputs analog PAL when playing PAL footage - maybe capturing the analog signal via capture card thang would do the trick in this case?

thanx

Not sure if that will work or not, Mt box does not have analog in... won't be able to find out either since my PC9 was stolen with that tape in it:(
