Camera Bag/Carrier Advice

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions on a good system for carrying your camera/helmet/accesories to and from the DZ? I'm currently using a plastic "filing box" (w/ handle on top) but would like to get something a bit more substantial and protective. Any advice on companies that produce carrying cases specifically for camera helmet?

Thanks!

I've got the Square One soft camera helmet bag. It's nice for protecting my Hawkeye and D-box. It's just not big enough for all the accessories I keep with me and my SLR.

I'm going to get a Pelican case for my cameras and accessories and keep the Square One bag for the helmet. I'll get the Pelican case from Botachtactical.com

Good luck.

Before you drop a ton of money on a Pelican case... check out your local sporting goods/shooting store. I picked up a pistol case for my camera for less then $15, a metal case was only going to be $30. Most gun cases are lockable and hold up really well.

Like for putting in checked baggage on a plane.....;) Pelicans are wayyy to expensive.....

I dunno...most gun store cases are kinda soft for airplane usage. I travel to a few sniper competitions a year and always use a Pelican. Ive never had a rifle scope knocked around when I got to where I was going.

But I do agree,,,they ARE expensive.

As far as what I use for camera stuff. I went to the Container Store and got one of those big plastic trunks. Fits my helmet and a buncha other stuff too. Kinda unwieldy to tote sometimes but I get all my gear back and forth.

You can pick up plastic cases that snap close and pick and pluck foam for the inside at the Container Store too. I did that and made a case for my handguns that totalled about $8. No, it's not secure and no I wouldn't trust it to be run over by something, but for just simple storage that keeps stuff together and fairly safe, its a cheap alternative.

If you've got a $5 head, buy a $5 helmet.

If you have a fairly new mini-dv camera and a decent SLR, you've got about $2000 in camera equipment, plus accessories.

$60 for a case that will insure that stuff retains it's value is cheap. (my 2 cents)

The only cheap thing I've found in this sport is the sandwich I make and bring to the DZ.

We don't have one of those Container stores in my area. I saw one in San Diego, but didn't have a chance to get in. If the box is rigid enough for somebody to sit on and not crush, probably good enough.

Do you ever use your cameras for anything else besides skydiving? I always take my camera off the helmet after the weekend and store it in a regular camera bag for easy access. It only takes me a minute to assemble/disassemble it from the helmet.

As for the helmet itself...why do you need a bag or case for it? Its a helmet. It's not like its going to get broken and if it gets scratched up a bit, who cares, it will still work fine. Seems like a waste of money to spend on a case for that stuff to me. Just my opinion.

You may find it kind of bulky, but it works perfectly for me. I went to Wal-Mart and bought a large crate with a snap-on lid (probably the largest size without getting into the ones with the wheels). Bought some egg-crate foam, cut it up, and with a glue gun I lined the inside with the foam. In this crate I fit my Bonehead Bat Rack camera helmet (Nikon N70, shark fin, PC-100 D-box on top), gath freefly helmet, and Oxygn RW helmet, my camera bag (stores PC-100, film, filters, batteries, mini-DV tapes, video and still camera wide angle lenses, etc), freefly suit, camera jacket, RW suit, bird-man suit, gaffer's tape, sample videos, S.I.M., goggles, and logbook. The only thing that I don't fit in there is my rig (carry that on my back to keep the weight inside the box to a minimum), and the kitchen sink. :)Jairo

Speaking of which, should you be in Perry right now? It is the Mecca for rifle and pistol competition ;)
(Our departments director just got back and looks like he may have made it into the 'Presidents 100' for pistol).

Naaaa, Camp Perry is for that lay-on-a-shooting-mat-in-your-shooting-jacket crowd. Mine are tactical matches. Run-and-gun if you will. Time limits, multiple target / multiple distance engagements, speed drills, low light, moving targets, etc.

Leave the ole shooting jacket at home, strap on a tactical vest, knee and elbow pads, and a boonie hat and get busy!

Not, of course, to knock the Perry crowd (much). Some of those guys are hell on wheels! We had one older guy at a recent match. We were doing standing at 300yds at an 8" steel plate in about a 15mph wind. He hit 4 out of 5 slick as sh$t. You could tell he was an old high-power shooter.

"Run-and-gun if you will."
How about Shoot-n-scoot? ;)
Tried IPSC tactical rifle once with, of all things, an Chinese knock off of the AK-47. Idiot proof rifle, but how you are expected to hit anything with it is above and beyond me - one size fits none.

"in about a 15mph wind"
Yeah, heard the pistol boys at Perry had a wonderful time with gusts of over 30 mph - it wasn't a matter of if you would hit a target - but a matter of whose target you actually hit ;)

Oh yeah, this is a camera forum - ain't it.
Tried playing with the PC101 last night - quite a fun little thing - even got a to try out D/Ling the flick via the 1394 port to the PC into Premiere - thankfully they have copious amounts of user help docs.

two words: skate case.

Meaning figure skates. They're hard to find, but if there's a figure skating club nearby, they'll sell them inside.

A skate care is roughly one foot cubed, and will hold your helmet with the cameras mounted. Add a bit of extra foam padding to stop it from moving around.
