Question for Premiere ninjas

Recommended Posts

I have a PC9, and I have taken some sweet video. I always clip video and stills out, but what is the better way with Premiere? The stills that are captured are ok for emails to friends, but I was thinking that with Premiere and the beauty of DV video, I could extract sharp stills of better quality than just pushing the little button on the side into the memory stick... Any help would be appreciated...

The cool thing about using the photo button is the pictures are alreay screen captures at full res with good compression applied. if you need better then you have to start doing deinterlacing and other photo tricks to get the quility high on the frame grabs. I tried the Adobe method and for speed and ease I still use the photo button then just drag and drop all the stills to a folder to be published or mailed. If I needed a still for print... then I'd do the tricks other wise... IMO its not worth my time.

I love the little photo button on the side, works great. What I was looking for is how to take a wallpaper quality still when I get the Otter diving behind my friend, or some other money shot. Not something I am going to do for every jump, the photo button works great for those- just those special shots when I want more...

Is the information there for high quality video caps? Both NTSC (625 lines) and PAL (525 lines) are fairly low resolution, surely the fact that it's stored as DV doesn't make any difference, or have I misunderstood?

Hey, if you figure it out then post it back here 'cos I for one would love to be able to get betters stills from my PC9!

I guess the way I figure it is that when you watch digital DV on a TV, the resolution is incredible, and there are 30 of those frames per second. (I think). There must be a way to grab that incredible quality frame, and use that as a pic. Not for the everyday stuff, but when you have the Otter banking over your shoulder and stuff like that... When I figure it out, I will post it here for sure...

If you capture a pic when your camera is in memory mode the resolution will be much higher. Unfortunately, if you are doing framegrabs after the fact you can not get that high resolution anymore because there is only so much resolution on the tape to start with. Does this make sense? Basically, the camera does not shoot in near as high a resolution when you are in video mode as it does when you take a still in memory mode. Hope this helps.

Are you sure? I am thinking that when I have the PC9, and I want to take a still in memory mode, it seems to be the same size file. I would think that the end result would be the same if you put it in memorystick mode and took a still, versus if you were filming onto tape, and then went back and took a still out of the tape... Don't know, there is soooooo much to learn...

Is the PC9 megapixel? I was thinking it was not. Also in the menu you can change the still res for when you put it into still mode. Default is crap (DV quality) but you can bump it up a lot. I know on my 110 I can put out Megapixel stills that blow my DV captures away but it takes several hours of playing with a frame grab to even think about printing it.

I don't think it is a megapixel. I messed around with the two qualities of stills when I first got it. I took a pic of a beer can, of course, on fine, and one on the standard setting. I think the difference was 30% by file size, but couldn't tell a difference at all. In fact, I thought the lower resolution was better when I was blind comparing...
