protecting your camera in freefall - what's best?

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone.

I am curious to all of your opinions about what is the best way to have your camera mounted to protect it from everything.

Is it best to have it in a Dbox? a Camera condom on a bracket?

Vern, Kelly and I were all talking about this on Sunday and I am curious to all of your opinions. :)

I would say the dBox is going to protect it the best. Just my personal observation and not scientifically studied -- just an opinion.

The dBox also makes it very easy to remove the camera from the helmet. Not all other systems are that easy.

And when you use your D-Box (or any other mount), always use the thumbscrew through the D-Box into the tripod mount on the camera to secure it as well. If SkydiverChick's BF had done that at the WFFC this year, he'd still have his camera.

The locking strap on his D-Box came undone in freefall and when his camera hit the tarmac the pieces filled up a large ziplock baggie quite nicely. There weren't many parts that were over a couple of inches in size. That bad-boy shattered like glass.

Big note here is only some style Dboxes allow for a nice thumbscrew to be used. The 2 piece like the original PC5 for instance has nothing to fasten the screw to. The screwhole lines up where the box gets split so if the outer half pops off... there is nothing holding the camera in anymore. The hinge stlyes or any of them with a flat bottom are perfect for the thumbscrew.

In most cases.. I'd say a Dbox is the best possible mount. Top or side it gives the most protection that you can hope for. But with some style Dboxes... you might be better to get a Roll Cage from Aerial Focus to mount the camera in. I'm not a fan of L brackets at all.

I'm not sure whether this is true or not but someone suggested to me the other day that camera condoms were bad because if any water gets inside it's got nowhere to go and has to stay inside with the camera.....?
