Chin Cup or No Chin Cup

If you want to shoot freefly video with a PC101 with a .47 or maybe a .3 wide angle, do you really need a chin cup? I was thinking about just getting a mindwarp and L bracket.

I forgot, if I don't go with Mindwarp, I was going to get a 2k Comp. FF2 camera helmet that has a nice chincup. It's a lot more expensive, but if a chincup is worth it....

I've got a hawkeye, and it's really a lot more comfortable with the chincup ratcheted down. It's wobbly without it.

I've never jumped it with just the chinstrap, and I don't really want to.

Get an Optik...nice comfortable helmet and the chincup is included for under $300.

I've never jumped with a chin cup. I do a lot of laughing and "yahoo"ing in freefall and I understand that the chincup would cause the helmet around a lot. If I was doing 'outside' camera work then I'd consider fitting a cup.
With just a chin strap and a 0.42 lense I don't get much camera shake.

Besides making a more stable video the chin cup will help to seal the helmet to your head. It makes for a imho nicer fitting system. Also in the case of a riser slap or something a chin cup makes it hard for the helmet to rotate like a loose system can. Another thing to think about is how often have people let the plane with out fastening the little buckle on a normal helmet? Not with the weight of a camera on one side... bye bye helmet and camera. With a Chin cup its nest to impossible to forget to fasten it.

With a really ligt camera and a tight fitting helmet, many times a ChinCup is not necessary.

Top mounting or multiple cameras, yes, I always suggest one.

Yes, the OptiK is a great helmet and a good price. If you think you are ever going to be shooting stills in the future it may be a consideration for you

I haven't had any problems with my Invertigo X and side mount Panasonic. I'll probably go with a chin cup when I get my still cam mounted on top though.

I see too many people who add a chin cup and then have their former chin strap connected as well.

This bugs me. I tell them to pick one. And I tell them why I say that. (see below *)

*I did this for about 8 jumps and then had someone pull on my camera mount/helmet and I tried to get out of my camera helmet.

Get this... it was difficult.

So about chin straps - you dont need two. IMO

I jumped my Hawkeye once without the Chincup. SCARED ME TO DEATH. Helmet moved back and forth the entire jump and I was afraid it was going to fall off. If you jump a Hawkeye (which I LOVE as a camera helmet) I suggest you us the chin cup

Well, if I had had just one, yesterday I would have lost 2 grand worth of gear.

I launched a greased safe out of a King Air (how many people have done that!) and I cracked my jaw against the plane as we exited. This released my chin cup as I dropped off the plane. If I hadn't had the chin strap too, I probably would have lost the whole kit and kaboodle. I reattached the ratchet while head down in formation (and turned my camera back on) and got most of the skydive ( a 700th celebration).

I'm glad for the second strap. I practice a quick one-two release the same way every time, and I think it's worth it.

I pick two.

I jump a mindwarp with PC-9.
currently I just have a chinstrap.
it kind of pulls the helmet to one side from the weight of the camera. it is fine for freeflying, but I have noticed in several shots that the horizon is tilted due to the tilted helmet.
a chincup would prevent this.
just something else to consider.
