On-line Field of View Calculator

Recommended Posts

The other day this came up and ever since I've been trying to find a better on-line field of view calculator.

THIS should work quite nicely for just about anything you want.

Pretty freekin' cool!

Now, the issue is going to be getting exact sizes for the imagers in your video/digital still cameras cameras. You might want to do some research at HERE.

ALL Sony manuals can be found HERE. so there might be exact specs for your video camera there.

Here's one still camera to get you started (my new baby!)

Canon D60 = 22.7mm x 15.1mm

And here's some additional info for the Sony TRV10 & 8 according to the Sony manual.

Focal Length = 3.3mm to 33mm
Imager = 1/4 inch chip (I assume that's diagonal but ya never know)
HERE'S the one ya REALLY want . . .
35mm equivilent! = 42mm to 420mm (?!?)

Which means that to match your 28mm lens on your 35mm camera you need a wide angle lens of .666!

Simple huh? Well, not really since film and video are two different aspect ratios, but it'll get ya pretty darn close.

Thanks very much , I understand most of that , I think.:S

That being said I am going to put a .42 odd on the PC100 , which will be beside a 15mm lens on the stills. Will let you know how I get on..

That's a theoretical .666 and from what I've seen the Sony .6 on the TRV10 and 8 is pretty close to the predicted size. You have to push it in slightly in order for it to match the 28mm lens of a 35mm still -- which totally makes sense.

Yes, the new baby is the Canon D60. I got mine about 24 hours before Raoul's was delivered. ;) About $2,200 for the camera and about $450 for the lens. Still waiting for the N3 plug to make up the trigger release. I won't jump it until after Nationals -- I've already reconfigured my helmet for a two video set-up.

I'll be shooting the D60 with a 20mm lens which would be the equivalent of a 31.718mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Raoul, Skeff and I will be all be shooting D60s at the POPs 120-way event the week before JFTC and selling digital prints right on the spot. I don't have a commitment from the "Boyz-ways" for that event yet.

I'll take my D60 to Laughlin and do the same for the Nevada State Record Boogie.

What lens are you going to use ? What CF card do you have ?
I'm thinking about buying one for the 2002 World Cup in Spain.

Oh, I'll put up a full review and links to photos once I've had a chance to jump it a few times.

Just for starters though --

D60 + 20mm Canon lens + 256meg card.

I'll be shooting in the "Large Fine" mode which will give me about 100 rounds in the magazine. The first burst of 8 photos will fire at 3 frames per second with follow on shots about 1 per second unless the cache has a chance to flush, in which case it's back to 3 fps.

I haven't quite determined what I want to do for exact settings yet.
