Editing Q's: Board or Puter

Recommended Posts

Okay.....which do you prefer, using a board to edit or puter with DV editing? I use the later, and think that my product is just as good if not better than some done with boards. What is the general thought about processing the product? Also, I was able to offer something other than VHS to the TPass and they were thrilled. DVD !!!!! I can't do DVD with my board. Any thoughts about where the DVD thing is going?? Has anybody else started offering DVD to customers???? (I owe beer for my first Skydive Tandem DVD!!!!!!!)

There are a couple of ways that you can do DVDs, but the reality is that for a tandem operation it's just not quite there yet.

At my office we have a Pioneer PRV-9000 DVD Recorder, but the reality is that it's fairly difficult to make a DVD that will play on EVERYONE'S DVD machine no matter what. We've found this out the hard way. The problem has to do with the recording medium that is available to consumers.

Here's the disclaimer from the Pioneer web page;

*DVD-R media is compatible with most DVD-Video players and DVD-ROM drives. DVD-RW media is also compatible with many players and drives when using DVD-Video mode. In either case, users should confirm playback compatibility with their target player model or computer system prior to purchase.

So, you can imagine how pissed off a customer would be if it didn't work in -his- machine.

Also, if I recall correctly this stand-alone unit which -can- make DVDs in REAL TIME does cost about $3000. So, for some certain applications, this is a very cool machine, but as I found out recently (I made some "Best of" DVDs for some Arizona Vengeance team members that way), not quite perfect.

My default/prefered/best method of making DVDs now, is to import the stuff into iMovie on a Mac, convert the material and produce it via iDVD and then burn it. Takes quite a bit of computational power and time though. There ain't NO WAY that would work for a tandem operation.
