Camera Helmet

Recommended Posts

Okay, all of you high speed vid guys help me out with this....
I'm thinking of setting up another helmet system. I'm seriously considering a Hawkeye Flattop. Limiting factors include: 1. I don't shoot stills. 2. Money. I know that the Bonehead Flattop Pro is probably the best, ($650), but I'm trying to stay within a budget. Anyone using a Hawkeye system and how do you like the fit and weight? I've also considered building my own and tailoring it to my specific needs. Anyone ever built a camera helmet from scratch using fiberglass? I've been doing some shopping and I think that I can do it for well under $100. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm jumping a protec modified with mounts. I can't keep the foam inserts in one place and the darn thing is very uncomfortable. If anybody knows where I can get some more info on that would be helpful, please let me know.

I've never made a camera jump, so take what I say and maybe forget it, but I've been fixing up my old pro-tec. I hope to try it out soon. I put a football chin strap on it. You can buy some little fasteners to put on new buttons after drilling a few holes. I then took a thin piece of plywood and bolted this to the top with the same type of fasteners that fit flush. I then fiberglassed this in place, sanded things, and painted it. I plan to run a small bolt up through the center to fasten the camera to. It looks pretty nifty if I do say so myself. My only worry is ripping everything off on exit. I'm working on a D-box now. I took some neoprene rubber and am fiberglassing the outside of it. I also plan to have some experienced camera flyers check things out before jumping my handiwork. I hope noone laughs me off the dropzone. Actually it's been a fun project and I think it'll even work. If you see and elderly guy with a mailbox on his head it is probably me. Steve1
