freeflyanvil 0 #1 October 24, 2002 What the general opinion on this camera? Would it be practical to use for skydiving?Vid "stons fal, evrysing fals, but doesnt on purpos change its flite pas an positioning..."
quade 4 #2 October 24, 2002 I did a bit of research on it about 9 months ago. For the amount of money you'd spend on the camera and interface to trigger it, you'd get some fairly nice results. Not as good and REALLY not as fast as a Canon D60, but if you picked your shots and never wanted to do continous shooting, it'd be acceptable for some stuff. Oh yeah, you're also pretty much stuck with the lens it comes with. I think that ultimately, you'd be disappointed with it's performance and eventually go to something like a D60 anyway. If -I- was trying to do digital on the cheap -- I'd find somebody trying to get rid of his D30.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
wlie 0 #3 October 24, 2002 Check out your last couple issues of Parachutist. There was an article about going digital, and the guy featured uses a Coolpix. I think you'll see the interface Quade's talking about. My other ride is the relative wind.
freeflyanvil 0 #4 October 25, 2002 >>I think you'll see the interface Quade's talking about. I've seen this thing called digisnap 5000 from some company that's actually made for a coolpics 5000. Basically, it's some sort of adapter that allows for a standard shutter release switch or something. I dooooo want a D60, but really, the camera's not for working so I dont want to dump that much dough. I originally wanted still, but said that I'd just go regualr film for now. I'm not able to make myself buy a film camera, so I think that I must have digital... Vid "stons fal, evrysing fals, but doesnt on purpos change its flite pas an positioning..." Cajones 0 #5 October 25, 2002 The 5000 in parachutist was my camera. It makes very nice prints up to 8x10 (5 megapixel). My previous camera was the 990, which was actually almost as good. Image quality was only noticeable in the 8x10 sizes. Both use the DigiSnap controller from Harbortronics (harbortronics.com). I plan to retire the 5000 for a special application many of you will see in Rantoul next year. The way the D60 should drop with the new EOS 11 megapixel and the Kodak 14 megapixel, I'd certainly opt for the D60. I, and at least a few of the other Martini Shot flyers, are waiting for the D60 price drop because it is such a sweet camera. The laws of physics are strictly enforced. prost 0 #6 October 25, 2002 I don't know if you will see much of a drop because of those new models. Their price will be so much more than the D60 it should not affect it.
Cajones 0 #7 October 25, 2002 Possibly so. I also think the serious photographers will be selling their D60's to go to the newer models, though... The laws of physics are strictly enforced.
