What does everyone use for DV capture and editing?

Recommended Posts

Studio 8 is very cool... a bit of a dumbed down interface for my tastes (I started on Premier 6). But after I got the chipset issues worked out on my PC with the program it runs quite nicely. The Hollywood FX program has to be the coolest thing I've seen for stupid transitions and simple effects. Its WAY easier then After Effects. If it did'nt cost as much I'd love to get the pro or even the plus to get the additional effects and options. Fast learning curve on the product.

Over all I'd give it 4/5 stars ;)

Frank I'm using 8 now,, it makes for easy work especially after starting with 7,,, does anyone here use Vegas??? I have a bud that really likes the layering and linear (or is it non linear) editing that you cant do with P8,, makes for some cool effects...

I'm still using 7 without too many problems (I get some funky stuff when making mpegs). I've got the upgrades to 7 as well so it's actually 7.15 or something like that. I've got a friend hunting down version 8 off the internet...I'm tired of paying every few months for the upgrades.:S

I was just getting ready to ask pretty much the same question. I gather most here use their PC to do the video editing? Reason I ask is I have a friend who I've worked with in the past who is into filming events(not skydiving) and I've actually used his video editor to compile footage on a storyboard and then assemble it with an audio track. His machine is made by applied magic and in my opinion, was idiot proof. My question is does anybody else use this piece of equipment or is it over kill for skydiving vids?

Custom built AMD Athlon 2100 (by me)
1gb ram
20 gig system drive
80 gig storage drive
cdrw
Matrox RT2500 hardware encoder

I use a Premiere 6.0, and for my skydiving vids, I have NO problems. Of course in order to do this, I had to buy approved hardware, configure it using specific versions of drivers, and not use the PC for ANYTHING else, lest I screw something up.

As long as I can dedicate that as a video editor, it works mostly perfect, with few lockups. As long as I remember to reboot several times a day, and save, save, save, I generally have no issues.

I also save time by importing the DV by using scenalyzer live, which breaks up my video into scenes by looking at the timecode date stamps. Before, I had to find each scene change, cut it, and add a transition. Now All I have to do at that point is just drop each scene into the timeline, and a trasition between each one. Saved me 10 mins per tandem video. :)
HOWEVER>:(>:(>:(although my editor works great, I cant with good conscience recommend the matrox card. They market it as an entry level professional platform, but give marginally consumer based warranty service at best. For instance, if it breaks, it takes you shipping EVERYTHING back to them (broke or not), and within 21 days, they will return a replacement. NO advanced replacements, etc available. I dont know of any professionals that can close thier doors for 2 weeks while they wait for the service tech to fix something. When I had a cable fail, It took hours of phone calls (no exaggerations) and finally an email to the CEO to get something done. When I tried to outright BUY the part that broke and bypass the warranty to get back into business, it took 3 hours and 3 phone calls to figure out how to buy one. At first they didnt even know the part# (even tho I had it stamped on the part) or how much to charge me. To make matters worse, this happened the first morning of a boogie that I was working, and even tho I ordered and paid for next day priority fedex shipping they relayed the box thru another matrox office and I didnt get it for 2 days. >:(>:(>:(>:(>:(

when i bought it several seasons back, it was just prior to the Imacs doing real time. My next editor WILL be a mac most likely.

I have been editing semi professional & for private for 5 years now and I used to have a fully blown custom extra add on's double pumper supa rear ender with shiny knobs all the bells and whistles, I don't even want to start with the endless trouble I had with it,
Won't dare repeat it's name as I am shure it will hear me and haunt me again,,,

But ever scince I am reborn with MAC, { it was a slog at first} Things have never been so good editing wise,
They were made espicially for editing in mind .
