are risers interchangable???

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1997 Javelin NJ and I noticed that the metal ring for the RSL(on the riser) is on the opposite side of the rig than my friends Javelin. Are the risers interchangable left and right if i do not have an RSL installed? Other than the metal ring the risers appear identical, but better to ask than be sorry.

Thanks
JOHN

just to clarify, I am talking about the same set of risers on the same rig being interchangable left and right. the canopy is hooked up to the risers correctly, but i am wondering if the right side of the canopy could be hooked up to the left riser, and the left side of the canopy to the right riser. its hard to explain this and not seem confusing.

You want to make sure that the RSL attachment point is the correct attachment point. I once saw a pair of risers put on a rig and the attachment was too high on the riser. The first deployment after installment it popped the reserve pin and the student had an instant two canopy out downplane.

My suggestion would be to take it to a rigger and have him/her give it a close inspection.

Generally speaking, if the RSL ring is hanging off the side of the riser (as opposed to off the back) then the risers are side specific (assuming you want to use the RSL, otherwise it doesn't matter).

Most rigs are designed with the RSL shackle routed to one side or the other of the MLW. If you route the shackle under the MLW you're mis-routing it and creating bad juju.

So, given that the shackle has a specific routing, a side hung ring needs to be on the same side as the correctly routed shackle! :)

I saw a guy jump with his canopy backwards. I assumed he did that with his risers switched. Of course, that put the 3-rings on the other side, didn't it? I didn't say it was safe. Only that it could be done.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

Yes, you can hook it up backwards. It's not idiot proof.;) Some manufacturers label the risers with an R and an L and the RSL ring will also indicate the appropriate side. But you should learn how to tell by checking the line continuity.

Also if you really mean can you use the right riser on the left side and the left riser on the right side and hook up the canopy right, yes. Only the RSL attachment and sometimes the velcro for storing the line are different from side to side. Many risers without RSL rings are identical left and right.

I also have a Jav (J1) which had the RSL on the right side.
The attachment rind was on the inside of the right riser so it would be cause for concern if it was swapped to the left, this would put the ring on the outside of the riser and poxxibly cause it to snag on something. I have completely disconected the RSL and stowed it away

To expand on the original question about 3-ring risers, most mini risers can be installed on most harnesses. It does not matter whether the harness rings are large or mini.
The only exception is Aerodyne's new miniforce risers, which will still fit on most harnesses, you just have to check that there is sufficient slack in the release housing.
Risers with large rings can only be installed on harnesses with large rings.
Any pair of risers can be switched left for right with impunity.
RSLs tend to complicate the issue.

I agree with squeak. the rsl ring would be on the outside if you change the side of risers if its old style. newer riser have the rsl ring in he middle. javelin put it that that way so that there isn/t anything hanging to the outside that could snag on something and have premature reserve opening. Also the velcro on the rsl needs to mate completely or will cause undo wear on your reserve riser . So if it's in the middle, ok or if you want to jump w/o the rsl then no problem but side oriented..
.. talk to your rigger there are so options. (inexpensive)

Also: The cutaway cables don't pass through the little loops simultaneously. The side with the RSL always has a bit more cable. Maybe an inch worth. Check it out. The idea is to let the other riser (non RSL) get clear a moment sooner. It helps your odds on an entanglement.

Get a local rigger to check it out. Worst case you get a new handle and trim it, or switch the risers over.

And, if you do move RSL over, check the routing and length, as mentioned above.

And, learn it. get it into your head that it moved. It's good to know where that shackle is, in case you need to release it. The when and where's is a whole new thread.
